Question

The worst server connection problem you will ever see.

Dec 12, 2016 6:51PM PST
So. Calling all networking geeks out there. This is a challenge.

Hello.

I'm not a total guru when it comes to this stuff, but I can fix a variety of normal problems fairly easily. This is quite literally the worst server connection problem I have ever seen.

Long story short, I like to game in order to relax and I have a particular server I play on to really relax. Unfortunately the last time I connected to the server was the 28th of last month and I haven't been able to get in since. (IP is 162.248.88.169:27015)

To fix my connection problem I have done the following or had someone else do the following:
-Restarted the game
-Restarted my computer
-Checked my internet connection
-Checked to make sure I am not banned from the server
-Pinged the server. Note that I can ping and send packets and receive packets but can't actually connect.
-Opened the :27015 port
-Temp disabled both the router and PC firewall. Still nothing.
-Disabled AVG, nothing. I know AVG is cancer but give me a break.
-Added PC to the DMZ list and still nothing.
-Reset the host file. RESET THE HOST RIFLE.

And still nothing. Please help?

Yes, this is a Garry's Mod server. And no, it isn't broken. The server was down when you saw it but it is now back online and I can not connect. Any ideas on how to fix it?

The Dynamic DNS record is OOD (out of date.) You have to contact red and ask.

We contacted them and you would not believe the response. In order to fix this we would have to send off a physical letter asking for the DNS record to be reset and it would take 3 weeks to process, and they have stated publicly that they will not accept any requests period due to "security issues." ...why even bother then? Am I just (explicit)? Or is there another way around this? And what security risk is run by just resetting the DNS?

But I can't guess what security issue they are thinking about here.

That aside, the 2 times I took a deep look at the IP you listed the server was down. So that's a great reason to ask it's master what's up.

The server is up.

I don't know what your talking about. The server is up and people are playing. Maybe you're having the same issue?

At the times I checked, it was not up.

At this point I wonder if there is some ISP blocking.

Try other paths to the server like through a VPN or cell phone link.

ISP Is not blocking...

I contacted my ISP multiple times and each time my ISP said they do not block ports. Why would they block a port to an innocent game anyway?

How would I go about getting to the server via a VPN or cell phone link?

So you didn't try another path.

You can't connect from your PC/laptop from your home via your ISP to that server.

1. To exclude the ISP, router or connection as the cause: take your laptop to somewhere else and try there.
2. To exclude your laptop as the cause of the issue: try it from your home with another laptop or a fresh install of Windows or from Linux.
3. To exclude yourself as the issue, try another username. You might have been blocked (if it's a block based on your ip-address, that's included in #1)

If it's a desktop, it's somewhat less transportable, so it's somewhat more work. Then start with #2.

It's a fact, as you state, that other users from other locations on other PC's can connect. So if you vary all three (user, location, PC) you can connect also. But probably, only one of the three variables needs to be changed to be succesfull.

Found the answer!

So, as it turns out it was not the server's fault, my computer's fault or my ISP doing something wrong. Check this out. From my ISP:

"Our network engineer identified which upstream network was filtering port 27015 (and possibly others), which it appeared to be filtering in *both* directions. He notified that network operator and they made a correction. I found those servers are reachable now."

I don't have a clue what filtering in both directions means but who cares? Its fixed. Thanks to everyone for helping however.
