The Windows XP upgrade question

The Windows XP upgrade question: Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP on April 8. While you're technically free to keep using the 12-year-old operating system, doing so may put you at greater security risk for attack as future vulnerabilities go unpatched.

Answer
Pretty much the same as before.

1. Ascertain if you hardware can run either.
2. Decide by the results.

But why do folk think there is an upgrade here? That is, our files and definitely the applications are not going to survive. It's a fresh install.

Correction: Microsoft HAS ENDED support for Windows XP.

That said, Bob as usual has hit it pretty spot on. If the hardware can run Win 7 or 8, I personally wouldn't hesitate to go with 8. It's not overly difficult to ignore the start screen 99.99% of the time and the various improvements in the rest of the OS more than make up for that 0.01% of the time.

If the hardware won't run 7 or 8 well, Linux or one of the BSD family of operating systems would be my recommendation.

Did you lie to me?

Microsoft issued a patch after the end of support. I have folk calling me a liar now.
