General discussion

the undeletable file/folder

May 24, 2007 7:00PM PDT

1999 dell desktop, xp home, sp 2, pentium 4, 1.8 GHz, 384 MB ram, 20 Gig HD, NTFS, McAfee security center 2006.

When i would defrag my disk with the windows defrag program, there would be 2 files that would not defrag nomatter how many times i run it. the folder is "C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT" with more than 1,800 files. mostly under 512 KB but, 2 fo them are big. 1 at 1.83 Gb, and the other is 2.11 Gb. Having a 20 Gig HD, 4 Gigs is a lot to waste.

all of the files have no extention, 0 size, and 0 size on disk. every file in the folder is like that.

NPROTECT most likely means a folder associated with Norton antivirus, since that is what i had installed until i got McAfee. the folder attributes are Read-only.

tried removing read-only, won't work. tried deleting the files, won't work. started windows up in safe mode going through the command prompt, won't work. tried programs to delete the folder when windows starts, won't work.

Help is appriciated and wanted. any suggestion will help. replacing the DH is a last resort. Thanks in advance.
