That's interesting, Dave. I can't help but wonder if a violin maker got his hands on some of the proper (in age and type) wood, say from "salvage" from a badly damaged antique, and used it in construction of a violin if it would have that tone. Just a rambling thought.
Here's another one. As there was "a 'Little Ice Age' that gripped Europe from the mid-1400s until the mid-1800s" for that period of 200 years, might a look at temperature trends in the 150 years from that end to the current time tend to show in comparison a (dare I say it...) a global warming?
