Question

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be c

Jul 3, 2017 1:19PM PDT

Hey guys,

My ASUS 1215B EEE Seashell Laptop recently wouldn't boot up properly, it already has Windows 10 on it, so I decided to just put a fresh installation of Windows 10 on it hopefully to fix any issues it may have. I booted/installed from a USB drive, installation went smoothly, all the way to the log in screen....that's when it all went wrong. When I tried to log in I receive this error: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted".

So I went crazy googling for a solution, and many of which involves messing with command prompt which I could not do because well I could not sign in. A workaround involves me booting up in safe mode and accessing command prompt from there, that didn't work either as when I select that option, it asked me for the password for Defaultuser0 in order for me to even use command prompt....so to fix that problem apparently I need to access command prompt to create an admin account (+ delete defaultuser0 if I wish) but without the password to Defaultuser0, I have no access to command prompt.

I also tried another method which they mentioned using a Windows 10 recovery USB drive, but it just puts me through the same loop, nothing changed, anything that I could use under the 'Troubleshoot' menu requires Defaultuser0's password. I even tried the troubleshoot option of wiping all files, it didn't ask for defaultuser0's password, but it also error-ed out and told me it couldn't complete that operation.

Also tried Asus factory reset, none of the recommended buttons are bringing up the factory recovery screen...think that partition may not be there any more(got the laptop used a while ago)....don't think it has a hard reset button either...I'm super stumped. Any help is appreciated!

Answer
This sounds like a fresh install of Windows.

Tell me how you installed the machine's drivers after the OS was installed.

Yes, a lot of folk forget that step or didn't know.

Ty, I had no idea, but how do I do that if I can't log in?

Thank you for your response. I honestly have no idea I had to do that. With my limited knowledge, I thought I could only install the machine's drivers after I log into Windows....How do I install the machine's drivers if I can't log into Windows and stuck at the log in screen with that error? Please advise, thank you!

When I install Windows I use a local login.

Booting ISO from USB, not in quick boot...not working
Jul 3, 2017 5:30PM PDT

This is so odd, after reading the article, it reminded me that I never noticed all the steps that was supposed to be shown to me during installation but wasn't there as far as I recalled. I did recall entering the Windows key...then it was doing its thing, then I recall having a slight hiccup where it stated that it couldn't complete the installation...so I googled for a solution and changed from msoobe mode to System Audit Mode...which fixed the error...continued the installation which bought me to the login screen...albeit with my current error. Per the article provided, I couldn't do the first half since I couldn't log into Windows and access the Start menu, So I proceeded to the second half of the article, however when I plugged in my USB with the Windows 10 ISO, it doesn't even offer the options shown in the article as it should, it just showed me a quick 3 sec of whether I want to boot from Volume 1 or Volume 2 which both are Windows 10.....and same result no matter which one I pick. At this point I feel that I have screwed up the installation so much that I may have to do a clean wipe and try again....I hope not but even if I want to, I couldn't as I do not know how other then plugging in my USB with the Windows 10 ISO created from Windows Media Creation tool which did nothing for unknown reasons....I made sure it was booting from the USB, also made sure it wasn't in safe mode(tried both), not in quick boot...but nothing....I am at loss as to what I should do, please help!

ISO?
Jul 3, 2017 5:36PM PDT

I don't use any ISO from USB when I install W10. I use Microsoft's Media Creation Kit.

It appears you are doing something non-standard. Try making your W10 USB install media with Microsoft's own kit.

Since it's a fresh install.

Just do it again. This time make that local login to avoid the networking until you have time to install drivers.
