The sale of the jet

by Angeline Booher / September 7, 2008 12:43 AM PDT
One of the compelling anecdotes about Sarah Palin is that she auctioned off the Alaska governor's jet on eBay after taking office -- a swift move made by a reformer hoping to clean up the excesses of her predecessor.

But in fact, the jet did not sell on eBay. It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the jet, shy of the original $2.7 million purchase price, according to contemporaneous news reports, including a story in the New York Times.

Dan Spencer, the director of administrative services for Alaska's Public Safety Department, said that the Republican speaker of the Alaska House, John L. Harris, brokered the deal. Reynolds made campaign contributions to both Palin and Harris in 2006 and 2007.

The original New York Times story:

The selling of the Jet was an admirable act. The speechwriter should have double checked how the jet was sold, It really is no big deal because the governor did order the sale on eBay, but it is details like this that people latch onto as demonstrated in this forum.

You should have read it instead of putting it down.

"Yes, she did put the Governors plane on eBay. No, that?s not how it was finally sold. Yes, McCain did say it wrong. Bad McCain."

This is an important news story why?

She said she listed the jet on eBay. She did not say that it was sold on eBay.

You got your facts wrong, not Palin or her speechwriter. That's what happens when you repeat bogus stories without checking your facts.

Oh yes, I see the writer you quote did not identify a higher bidder while insinuating that an inside, dishonest sale was made. Did you consider the possibility that the highest bid was $2.7 million?

BTW, why are you a party to the insinuation that Palin participated in a dishonest sale? That bit about campaign contributions. Then you wonder why such posts are roundly condemned as they should be.

I believe McCain said in a speech...
by EdHannigan / September 7, 2008 6:03 AM PDT

that she sold the jet on eBay. So he misspoke. Big deal. She did put the jet on eBay, It was sold. She didn't claim she sold it on eBay.

Why this is an issue is a mystery to me.

He also said she sold it at a profit
by Josh K / September 8, 2008 3:34 AM PDT

That wasn't true either, though I wouldn't have expected her to make a profit selling a "used" airplane, any more than I'd expect to make a profit selling my car.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
