50s pin-up queen Bettie Page dies
I never saw the Playboy pics. All the Page pics I recall from my misspent youth had her in the bikinis seen on the BBC site- IOW, fully-clothed, by the standards of today's TV. Happy

Forties heart-throb [Van] Johnson dies
I recall the sleaze magazines of the 50s suggesting that Johnson was a closeted gay, but elements of the BBC story seem to eliminate that possibility. His Go For Broke is of interest, if only moderately factual about the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

I first learned of Bettie Page...
by Josh K / December 13, 2008 3:36 AM PST

...through a friend who knew who she was (she was a bit before my time). I have a small magazine with some shots of her that he gave me. I also saw the film "The Notorious Bettie Page" which was pretty good.

Her real life after her pinup period was quite sad and filled with a lot of mentally unstable behavior, probably brought on by her childhood abuse.

His best friend was actor Keenan Wynn, who also had a long career.

When his wife left him for Van Johnson, there was more "publicity" about it than was usual for that time. Wynn didn't seem to mind sayimg what he thought about Johnson.
