"The Northern Lights"

Nov 21, 2003 7:47AM PST

(I do not have a link.)

Because of the increased solar storms/flares, the Aurora Borealis is being seen in states much further south.

last night they were seen in some areas of my state, and as far south as Florida.

A viewer sent in photos made in an adjoining conty. The colors were brilliant green and red.

More sightings cannot be predicted, but it is thought that tomoorow night could be one due to a recent solar storm.

When I was a child, we saw them frequently (northern KY), but the colors were not brilliant. Regardless, it was thrilling to watch them dance on the horizon.

Hope some of you are lucky and catch a show, which may be for only a few minutes.

...one of which is an aurora picture which is presently my desktop. It'd be nice if he remembered the link, as I lost it one format/reinstall ago...

And thank you for providing it, Paula!

I sent myself a link to put in my "saved" folder.

I told this story before.

The first winter my family was in AK, they were leaving for work. A neighbor ran out yelling, "The lights are out!" So they went back inside, but their power was just fine.

When they left the house, they then saw them - the neighbor meant The Northern Lights. Happy

A couple of weeks ago they were talking about them around here, even a bit south of me saw them. Unfortunately, most of the time was cloudy.

Bigger problem is the mill I work at is north of me, and it has so many lights that it really makes night sky viewing of any type difficult.

With the threat of new solar flares approaching as the active spots on the sun come round to face Earth again there will be more opportunities for auroras to occur.

I sure would like to be one of the lucky ones to get a glimpse!

I recall being able to see the Milky Way on clear nights years ago. I finally saw it again in '92 on a visit to Yosemite, and it was as pretty as I remembered.
