Do those .exe and .lnk programs work when you attempt to open them? Which operating system? Make and model of computer? etc...

If you haven't already, please download, install, update, then run the free malware scanner from the link below.. (Malware can cause the problem you're seeing.)

After that, if the icons aren't working, try the steps below to allow .exe and .lnk files to be associated correctly:

For Windows XP:

Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column). RIGHT click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP", choose "Save Target As " or "Save Link As", to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it or right click it and choose "merge" and answer yes to the import prompt.

Or...

Click on the link below, then look to the "EXE File Association Fix", and download the .zip file to your computer desktop.. ONce there, unzip the file, then double click on the "xp_exe_fix.reg" file that is inside, choose "OK/Yes, when it asks "Are you sure?".. Restart the computer.. It should now run those problem programs and Control Panel icons.

Or... For Windows 7...

Here's a link which should help. Start with the .EXE fix first..

Hope this helps.

that represent the executable or shortcut are looking like a white piece of paper rather than as they normally would try this:

Go to 'Start' open run command, type in Regedit.

In the new window of Registry Editor browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex and delete the subkey named 'IconHandler'

If you are worried about using REGEDIT here is another route you can try:

To refresh and reset the icons cache, go to the following folder:

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\

To see the hidden AppData folder, go to Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View tab, and select Show hidden files, folders and drives, and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended):\" and ignore any warnings as you can re-check it after you are done.

Once inside the folder, delete IconCache.db. Create a new file named IconCache.db, and set it to Read Only attribute in Properties (if the file is not read only, the cache won't be reset). Then restart the computer. Remove the Read Only attribute of IconCache.db file, and the icons cache will be refreshed. The step will restore the desktop shortcut icons to their normal appearing icons.
