"The Hurt Locker", $11 million film wins the BAFTA this year

that's the British Oscar (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts). It's a film about IED disposal in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Rachel Maddow thinks it's an exceptional film, so does Quentin Tarantino who was up for best director in the BAFTA's was hoping that Kathryn Bigelow would win.

Everything I've heard about it is incredibly positive

It looks both like a realistic and honest representation of military combat, and without an agenda except to represent the soldiers fairly. That is so unusual, since the anti-war fashion began just after the 1950's. That doesn't mean that anti-war movies are wrong, they have their place, but if that's all they make, then it's a gross misrepresentation.

A strikingly well crafted movie

This is one of those rare movies that depends on story. Writing seems to take a back seat in so many of today's modern movies that we often forget that a movie should be an intimate examination of a slice of life. The movie almost slips into a "Catch 22" parody at certain times, but never goes so far that it becomes comedic, or unbelievable. It just illustrates men who have chosen to live in extreme danger, and how they deal with their circumstances.

I especially like the lead actor, Jeremy Renner. For US TV viewers, you might have caught him in the recent (but lamentably too-soon canceled) TV series "The Unusuals". He is a fine 39 year old actor who has had few substantial roles until now. Let's hope the potential he shows in The Hurt Locker show thru in his future acting jobs.
