Question

The Group Policy Client service failed the logon: Help?

Oct 3, 2011 7:06AM PDT

I started to install a home network, but was interrupted. Now Windows 7 will not complete its startup except to say "access is denied." I did not start a recovery point before, hoping to get all the updates, etc. on before needing recovery. Is there any way to fix the problem without reloading everything?

Please note: System Restore not the answer.

The post clearly stated that no restore point had yet been made. Thus System Restore is impossible (athough tried).

I had hopes that ANY restore point was available before this

It was not that clear so it was worth a shot.

Now what happens with SAFE MODE? Since we have one without networking we can use that and in that restore to a point before all this. It may not be the one exactly at the point of the changes but it beats reinstalling the OS.

No Restore and No System Image
Oct 6, 2011 4:28AM PDT

I repeat that is not possible!
There are NO restore points and NO System Images to restore.
I have tried HP's (F9) Diagnostics which found no errors.
I have tried Safe Mode, but it showed no problems and no fixes.
I have tried Startup Repair, but it showed no problems and no fixes.
It also looked for a device driver disk, but, since I did not add a device, I was unable to supply a driver.
I have tried Repair from the CD, but it showed no problems and no fixes.
The only other option there was to reinstall or try upgrade, but, since this is already Win 7, upgrade is unlikely to work.
Any other suggestions?

What about using the SERVICES app and disabling the Group Policy Client Policy service?

Or changing what it logs in as?

No desk top: Win 7 fails to start
Oct 7, 2011 3:27AM PDT

Bob, Win 7 does not start properly under this error. There is nothing I can do except to allow it login to in myself. The same error message then comes up, but I have the choice to shut down (some choice!). So there is no way to reach the Services app.

Start proper or not.

I can't tell what we have to work with here. You wrote you can allow it to login to myself but if that is so, we may have enough of a working OS to launch control panels from the task manager. Tell more.

And we always have the recovery console options at http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/

The login does not complete and only allows a shutdown
Oct 11, 2011 5:51AM PDT

Bob, there is no way to get to the Control Panel. The computer does not get to the Desktop. There are no choices except shutdown. I can try the recovery console but remember there are no recovery points available. So will that do any good?

Remember I don't know

I don't know which Windows 7 DVD you have or if you can get to the Recovery Console.

For example at the Recovery Console I could use the SC command to cause the service that is failing to never start.

Not to duplicate the web about this command but sometimes when the OS is damaged I find the path to be the culprit. Read http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/sc-command-in-7-home-premium/d3813b91-84d3-4e50-8310-498083f39740

It appears that I was unclear about what we need to work on this machine.

1. The machine to boot the Windows 7 DVD.
2. The full retail version of Windows 7 (DVD.)
