The good, the bad and the ugly.

I'm looking to buy a laptop for Uni. I've lots of music and of course lots of essays to write and I'm a devilish multitasker. However, I am not a gamer.

Which manufacturers are good, bad or downright ugly?
Basically which brands should I look out for and which should I disregard.
Also any other relative tips are more than welcome.

Dell at the office.

Billions of them (sorry just thousands) and all boring.

At home we have the office machine, HP, Acer, Toshiba, Sony and all are doing well.

However when you hear the horror stories be sure to dissect if it was the usual Windows issue, the usual "I never made the restore media", the "I didn't make a backup of my files" or "It shouldn't cost so much to fix my out of warranty devices."

There are a lot of great machines that you should figure on just a few years then replace them.

For a shocker, look at the common laptop battery. Just 300 cycles? Did you expect that 1 year battery?
