The Fine Points

Jul 23, 2008 2:43PM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm looking to build my first website but Im stuck on a few fine points. I don't know html, so I'm looking for a program that I can use to build an e-commerce website without any web design experience. I know I'll have to use templates, but it has got to look professional. I've just begun to use Yahoo Sitebuilder but I'm not sure how I feel about it and I'm concerned that i won't be able to host my website with anyone other than Yahoo because I used their software and templates to build it. Are my concerns justified? Also, how do you feel about Sitebuilder? Is it a solid program? What other free or inexpensive programs could I use that don't require html knowledge? Thanks a lot for all your help.

Every host

has a form of their own sitebuilder, and yes, if you used Yahoo's builder, it would probably have to be hosted with them.

Have you looked into Microsoft Office Live? It's free to build a website, but you would probably have to pay for some of the e-commerce features. You could also try to use a content management system like Joomla or Typo 3 and simply download a template for those.

All the ones I just mentioned allow you to buidl your website online. There are programs you can purchase but the good and easy ones aren't that inexpensive.

Do you lean towards one or the other?

Joomla, just on a gut feeling, seemed OK, but that doesn't count much.

I remember the first time I built a site, several years ago, I discovered to my dismay that it fit my monitor size, but not others. That would be one of my concerns this time around.
