General discussion

the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read

Apr 4, 2013 1:34AM PDT

I am using Windows Vista and had to wipe a virus from my computer. iTunes now gives me the above error message. I have attempted to rename the library file library.itl.old and use a previous library file. I have done the same and tried to open using the "shift" key," all with no results. If I delete iTunes and reload, how do I do this and keep all of my music?

Odd idea to delete iTunes.

But your post is scary. How could you lose your music? That is, doesn't everyone have a copy or two on backups?

After I get the backup done again, why not try installing itunes and see if it will fix it? That is, don't delete or uninstall.

Tried to install

iTunes download got to a certain point and I watched as the progress bar went backwards and told me to try again, which I did. No results. Windows prompted to search for a fix. No results.

Any thoughts?

Then the next.

Add/remove programs, that is uninstall iTunes. Then try.

Keep in mind that we only lose what we didn't backup.

That seems OK for Vista too.

I'd try that. But virus damage is sometimes too deep. Apple should not help on that issue unless you have an Apple computer and Apple OS. I know that sounds awful but my dad's PC caught this Zero Access rootkit and it had use reload the OS to cure what it did.

i downloaded winRAR and attempted to install the AMDS file and it tried - then i got the dreaded rollback and the message that it was not installed - encountered errors before it could be configured. i was directed to try again and got the same result.

before i reult to more drastic measures, any ideas?

Just one or two more.

1. I haven't used winRAR for years. I use 7zip

2. Try it on a new admin user account.
