The Famous Jeep Grand Cherokee Electrical Problem

Nov 16, 2007 7:05AM PST

It seems no one has solved this puzzle yet, but I'll give it a shot of my own. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

'97 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 135,000 miles

Various warning lights
Power comes on at night
Instrument cluster & gages haywire
Stalling
Dead battery overnight
Feedback in speakers
Repeatedly blown 20A fuse on engine fuse block
Turns over, but now won't catch

Replaced: Ignition switch & ignition cylinder block, cam sensor, throttle position sensor. Cost: $750

Tried: new battery, unplugging PCM computer, checked all fuses.

And the alternator checked out all right.

Any ideas?...the dealer in stumped. (replacing the PCM computer seems to only have a 50% success rate)

Relay?
Dec 18, 2008 9:53AM PST

I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee Limited. Here are my symptoms; Sometimes all of my dashboard functions fail, CD player, windows, heat, etc will all shut down. I can play with the automatic lock button and get them to work again only to have to lose all functions all together sooner or later. I haved learned through trial and error that I can take all of the fuses out of 'socket' and put them back in right away and everything works perfectly. 90 percent of the time I hear a clicky noise directly under the passenger side automatic lock, like some kind of switch. I also have replaced my passenger brake light several times over the last year but don't know if that is related. Any suggestion? Here is what has been supposidly ruled out so far: ignition switch, fuses, battery, connections. Thanks!

Relay... BCM
Dec 18, 2008 6:57PM PST

I remembered reading about the BCM (Body Control Module), which is not the PCM/ECM (Power Control Module) that everyone talks about. Don't know where the BCM is located on a 99 but did research and found that there is a Technical Service Bulletin out concerning BCM and Key-less entry locks that have to be reprogrammed... If this is it it should be no charge by dealer!!!

If this is the solution, be sure to come back and tell us the resolve... to help the next slob, like us... asking for help!!!

Good Luck!

Went to About.com and asked several questions and then got a hit... Read below and maybe ... related answer.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Q. Hi: I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a right front power window that seems to be stuck closed. Moving the power switch produces a clicking noise so the electric part seems to work, but it won't move. Can you suggest a fix?
Thanks,
Tedd

A. You're going to have to take the door panel off to see what's wrong. It's probably a bad power window regulator.

***Another reply...
There was a TSB on a problem that sounds very similar to yours. It applies to all 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokees. It involves a reprogramming of the Body Control Module (BCM) and the Remote Key-less Entry (RKE).

NUMBER: 08-03-00
GROUP: Electrical
DATE: Feb.11, 2000

SUBJECT:
Erratic operation of the power door locks, remote key-less entry system, power windows or power mirrors.

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves Flash Re-programming the Body Control Module and resetting the Remote Key-less Entry Module.

MODELS:
1999 (WJ) Grand Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Intermittent and erratic operation of the power door locks, remote key-less entry (RKE), power mirrors and power windows. This can be the result of a communication error in the Door Switch Module located in the passengers door. Revised programming in the Body Control Module has been developed to address this issue.

I would have your Chrysler Dealer check this and, is applicable, perform the reprogramming.

power windows and door locks
May 13, 2009 3:12AM PDT

reading these posts i observed discussions on two seperate problems.
1) you can hear the motor trying to move the window but it doesn,t

2) erratic operation of windows and door locks.

These are two very different problems.

For numbedr one, that is a broken window regulator assembly that would need to be replaced.

For number two, that is a software problem with the door modules that would need to be reprogrammed by a dealer.

Is reprogramming and technical service bulletins done for free by the dealerships? NO!!!!

The only time either of these are done by a dealership for free is if your vehicle is still under warranty.

The only things that are done by a dealership for free after your vehicle is out of warranty are federraly mandated vehicle recalls. If your vehicle has a recall on it you would receive a letter telling you this in the mail and instructing you to go to your dealership for repair.

Jeep Grand Cherokee phantom electrical problems
Mar 11, 2009 5:05AM PDT

Hi...
Just like so many Jeep Cherokee electrical problems on here it seems that our 2000 Grand Cherokee is also posessed. The car will turn over but will not start. The all too common failure is: while driving all instrument panel gauges go crazy then the car stalls as if starving for fuel then it completely dies. It will turn over but will not run. We found that by repalcing fuse #12 (right side, under dash board, red 10 amps) is blown and is not easy to get to unless you remove the panel. Replaced it and the car runs fine for a couple of days then the fuse is blown again. So far, we have repalced the following and nothing seems to fix the problem:

1- Battery and terminals

2- Starter

3- Fuel pump (twice!!)

4- Control Module (ouch... that one was very expensive)

5- All fuses and electrical relays in the power distribution box (the one in the engine compartment).

6- Ground wires were all inspected and verified as clean and making good contact.

The car has been to several "electrical specialists". None has been able to pin point the fault.

So, unless someone suggests another method, or knows how to fix the darn thing, am gonna shoot it and put it out of its misery. so please help; and oh please mail me directly if you have any suggestions mkotaiche@gmail.com thank you

Mkotaich

Would like to help but I'm lost on 2000 G Cherokees... I guess Jeep changed the design in 99. Checked and couldn' find a diagram of fuse box to tell me info

What does number 12 fuse control? Maybe nothing to do with problem but is semi connected to major issue!

Assume you used a scanner... what codes were shown?

Have you owned the car long? if not, then check history, cost about $20 bucks.
Carfax... http://www.carfax.com/cfm/general_check.cfm?partner=GAH_3&CMP=KNC-Google

Has the car been in a flood?... could produce same problems with bad wiring connections

Have you checked for Recalls and service Bullitins?

Jeep charges $99 for diagnostics... If other mechanics can't find, maybe best solution.

That all I got, maybe someone with better knowledge can help more...
Cat... Good luck!

Elusive Jeep G. Cherokee electgrical problems
Mar 11, 2009 7:46AM PDT

Thank you Cat for the reply. Fuse 12 controls the Auto Shutoff function which also controls the shuttoff to the fuel pump relay. I owned the vehicle for about 2 years. I ran it thru CarFax at the time of purchase and nothing out of the ordinary showed up. No flood, no accidents, etc. I have taken it to a dealer who diagnosed it and said everything seems to be normal (car was operating normally at the time). Now it is with an electrician who has worked on it for 3 days and can not find the problem either... Aaarrrrrggghhhh...

Auto Shut off Relay wiring to fuel pump
Mar 11, 2009 9:32AM PDT

Did a search "What causes jeep GC to shut down ASD relay".
The ASD Relays (Engine area), not fuse in BCM (Body control Module) fuse box inside car.

The below is what I found... from different people at allpar.com
http://www.allpar.com/fix/index.html

Story made short... Check fuel pump and wiring

Automatic Shutdown Relay by Bob O?Neill and Bob Lincoln
The power supplied to the fuel pump, ignition coil, fuel injectors, and parts of the power module is controlled by the logic module through the Automatic Shutdown Relay (ASD); the idea is to shut off fuel pressure and the ignition systems when the key is turned off to prevent fires, dieseling, and other problems. The relay is located in different places on different years.

In the 1985 ? 1987 model years, the power module houses the ASD. For the 1984 models, vehicles which use a SMEC or SBEC have an external relay. From about 1990 on, the ASD relay was in a plastic underhood relay box at the left fender well.

The ASD relay is closed (allowing power to flow through it) when the ignition is first turned on. If the signal from the ignition reference is lost while the engine is running, or if the turbo boost pressure reaches and exceeds the over boost cut-off point, the logic module cuts power to the ASD, which in turn removes power from the fuel pump, ignition coil, injectors and those parts of the power module. This causes the engine to shut down.

The logic module monitors the relay driver. If it senses that the relay driver is not responding correctly it will trigger a code. If the logic module does not sense an absence of current when the circuit is open, or 12 volts DC when the circuit is closed, it knows that the circuit is open or shorted, and triggers code 42. In later models which used the SMEC or SBEC, the logic module monitors the output of the fuel pump relay output as well as the fuel injectors. If it does not see 12 volts DC when the relay is activated, it triggers code 42.

Failure of the automatic shutdown relay is often shown as inexplicable stalling or refusal to start.

Bohdan Bodnar noted, ?The ASD can be triggered by a broken wire or short in another place, e.g. the fuel pump.?

For troubleshooting purposes only (don?t drive like this!), Ed Hennessy wrote: ?You can try feeding power to the fuel pump directly. Connect 12V+ from the battery through a fused link to the positive terminal of the coil. That will back feed 12V to the fuel pump through the ASD circuit. If the pump runs [it should be easy to hear], the ASD relay is bad. If not, the fuel pump or its wiring is probably the problem."

Good luck... Gotta go

About this RED 10 amp fuse????
Mar 11, 2009 8:18AM PDT

Well my first Q is why is this blowing? I would be doing some research before any other repair to find out what systems it works with and back probe all wiring to find a short. I do have a GCL that has AIDS and will do some research on this problem.

May 14, 2009 11:14AM PDT

You have given little info about car, model, size engine, etc.
What happens when you try to start it after shut down? What do you hear? Do you smell gas? Is the car hot or cold when stalling. At a stop or when on the highway?

1) Firstly... suggest to read all blogs and you'll begin to see a pattern. Take notes. Hone in on answers related to your problem.

2) without codes, I'm surprised the dealer didn't say something about gas related issues or security system... which pops up first on the hit lists... gas filter, gas pump, gas pressure, alarm system, key system, locks malfunctioning. fuel injectors clogged.

3) sensors... about 7 of them... (2)02 sensors, map sensors

4) catalytic converter clogged

Don't trust dealers word... check for recalls yourself. I found 2 for my car and was never contacted by manufacturer... one was reprogramming the PCM to the catalytic converter and the other was a transmission issue, where car sometimes didn't adjust the gas mixture higher when coming to a stop and shifting to first.

Any way... good luck and read the blogs

Jeep Elecrical problem too
Sep 18, 2009 5:09AM PDT

I've been reading the posts b/c my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee is on the fritz. It won't start even with a jump, the gages spin frantically as if alien ship nearby, and remote key doesn't work anymore. I'm wondering if maybe the Repair Shop may have done something to trigger this. About 3 weeks ago, the electric seat wasn't moving frontward or backward, so I took it to shop and they fixed it. Air Condition wasn't blowing out a lot of cool air, so got that repaired along with some sensors and stuff. Got in car to leave, it didn't start, the battery needed replacing. So, I replaced the battery. Total bill around $1000. Could it be that the shop may have "messed up" something or could this be a legitamate new issue? It just seems everytime someone from my household goes in for one thing, coinsedentally(sp?) something is on the fritz, too.

you dont have to take out all the fuses, just unplugg the batery, and wait 10 minutes to let the computer reset itself, then plug it again, and everything will work again, i have the same car and the same problem, it happends sometimes.

Disconnecting the battery doesn't fix the problem.

With all due respect, disconnecting the battery RESETS the electrical system, and alleviates the problem temporarily. It's not a permanent fix for the real problem.

famous GCL electreical problems
May 18, 2009 11:57PM PDT

I had all the symptoms you describe (blown 20A fuses, lights staying on, dead battery, engine cranks but it wont start, gauges going haywire, etc..etc..). I gave up attempting to repair it myself and finally took it to an electrical specialist who found the problem in the main wiring harness. He found two wires that have been rubbing against the chassis and have worn thru their insulation (thus why the problem was intermittent). He cut and replaced the worn out sections and then wrapped the wires for better insulation. It finally made sense when he explained that any momentery short affects the computer thus producing all kind of strange results. Good luck with yours and please let us know if this helped.

did you figure it out?
Jun 25, 2009 12:18PM PDT

i may have the answer to your problem...

i will need your help to diagnose it if you haven't figured it out already. I understand you're having trouble with it stalling unexpectedly and taking a while to start back? i have had the same problem with my 1999 and 2000 jeep grand cherokee limiteds. no dealer will fix it for you. they won't even tell you the problem. luckily i found a lot of helpful people on the internet. if you haven't figured it out yet...

do this first:

1) put the key in the ignition
2) turn the key to the point right before you are about to turn the engine over "ACC" PERFORM this step three time within 20 seconds and on the last time leave it in the "ACC" position

(the ACC position is where you can use all of your electricals but you can't turn the car on)

3) after the third time, some numbers will pop up in the odometer display (you can tell if you did this correctly because you will see the word "done" pop up on the display before the mileage is displayed again)

4) you might see P0320 or something similar.

if you see P0320, you need to change your crank position sensor. i can't remember the code for the camshaft position sensor, but it may flash on the odometer as well.

Any codes you get you can take to autozone and they will tell you what they mean for your car.

if you've been having this issue for a while, you've probably been killing your starter as you've probably been trying to get the vehicle started over and over. You might want to change your starter as well.

All in all, it should cost about $300 - $400 in parts. i did all the work myself and it took a little while, but i learned a lot about the car. let me know how it works out.

Has anyone figured out the flashing/blinking headlights? My lights turn off completely at times and I have to turn them off and turn right back on, very frustrating.

I have the same problem.
I took it to the dealer and they told me it needed a new alternator, that was not the problem.
Hope someone can give us an answer.

Have similar problem 1995 LTD blower motor runs when car turned off. Just beginning to explore. Tried fuses no go. Pulled blower fuse ignition will not work. Possibly a ground or relay off. Hard to trace. Maybe clunker material

My recent headache

Hi everyone--I'm hoping one of you can give me some advice, because my mechanics sure can't!

It started almost 2 weeks ago, I stayed home sick from work so my boyfriend took my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo to work. On the way to and from work it would stall on him while in motion! He didn't call to tell me about it until it started happening in the afternoon because he knew I would worry. He thought maybe I got bad gas, but it was from the same gas station we always go to, plus he got gas from there and his car was fine.

We took it to my mechanic who figured my fuel filter was horribly clogged, so much so that only grimmy black fuel with specs dripped out and he couldn't even blow through the filter. I got the car back and it still had the same issues, only now it stalled while I was driving it, alone, on a busy highway during am rush hour traffic! When I started it it was fine, about 5-8 minutes after driving when I had to come to my first deceleration because the traffic in front of me was backing up it started sputtering and shaking and then stalled out. Thankfully I got it over on the shoulder before it actually stalled. It wouldn't turn back over so I left it off for 2-3 mins and then let it sit on and idle for about 5. I got across the highway and then of course it drove fine all the way to the mechanic shop. He determined that the clogged filter must have worn out the fuel pump and it needs to be replaced. So he had the Jeep for 3 days, changed the fuel pump and some more filters inside the tank. When I went to pick up the Jeep it was still doing the same thing! So $600 later and no working vehicle. I finally broke down and brought it to the dealership for a further diagnosis and it is still there (today is day 2 at the dealer). The mechanics there can't find what's wrong--now it won't act up for them. Here's the information I gave the dealer service center--does anyone know what may be wrong with my Jeep, other then it being a major POS!?

- stalls while in motion
- stalls after running for 5-10 mins
- stalls while sitting idle after turning on after car has been sitting off for 4 hours or more
- replaced fuel filer and pump
- idles incredibly hard (i.e. shakes alot when idle)
- no dash lights have ever come on
- when hooked up to the computer monitor, no code present
- while it was sitting idle my boyfriend slightly touched the wires at the end of the fuel injector strip (I'm not car-savy so I'll try to explain this: there are 2 wires that face towards you near the front of the engine, almost to the fan, that feed into the harness of all the fuel injectors--the cable covering is coming apart but he barely touched that area and the car immediately died twice)

- I had 6 sensors replaced in Oct 2008
- New battery put in Jan 2009
- New seal replaced on rear axle berring and new rear differntial fluid in Feb 2009 (no affiliation, just more money)
- Fuel filter replaced in Sept 2009
- Fuel pummp replaced in Sept 2009

The mechanics are leaning towards the crank and cam sensors or an electrical problem, but they can't find anything until it acts up again--which it won't because it's in the shop. If anyone has info that would help me, please write--the car is becoming very unsafe and I don't feel comfortable driving it anymore. If I cannot find a resolution I'm going to trade it in--I can't have a money pit or an unreliable car.

Thanks!

Your Jeep is much more complicated than mine because of the added sensors to the emissions system and newer computer (PCM). My '94 4.0L is almost new again because of all the sensors that I replaced so far and in the end it finally quit stalling after I replaced the crankshaft position sensor. The computer kept telling me to replace the camshaft position sensor and when I did it still stalled, plus it kept telling me to replace it. Anyway, I say look in the last place I looked and cut to the chase, replace the crankshaft position sensor and see how that goes, $60 or so and not too hard to do. It is usually hard to get to but patience and some really long ratchet extensions will get it done. Mechanics will ask for $160 or a little more to do it, bull****, get someone to tackle it for you.

ps My PCM wouldn't detect that it was bad, no codes that pointed to it.

Hey there! Well I got a temporary fix--my original mechanic replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump. 2 days after I got the Jeep back it did it to me again, so this time I took it to the dealership. The guys there were so nice (unlike most dealers I've been to). They kept the Jeep for 5 days and could not find a single thing wrong and couldn't get it to act up at all! The service manager even drove it home and back one night with the computer on it to see if in the morning ir would stall--nothing. So I got the Jeep back and it's running fine. It idles harder then it did before all these issues, but it also has 91K miles on it.

I'm expecting something else to go wrong with it sooner or later--so it's just a waiting game now. I never replaced anything with the crank or cam shaft sensors or parts because nothng was reading wrong with them. It's been about a month now and no stalling or sputtering so hopefully the fuel filter/pump fixed the current issue.

I'll keep the forum updated if I encounter more issues down the road.

I recently had my axle seals done, drive train,& ac compressor. Thats was just a month ago and now the drivers side locks, window controls, mirror controls, interior light and passenger side window controls do not work.. I thought it was just my jeep, I had not heard of any of these problems until now. Has anyone had these problems or have any suggestions? Thank you
