The Famous Jeep Grand Cherokee Electrical Problem

Nov 16, 2007 7:05AM PST

It seems no one has solved this puzzle yet, but I'll give it a shot of my own. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

'97 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 135,000 miles

Various warning lights
Power comes on at night
Instrument cluster & gages haywire
Stalling
Dead battery overnight
Feedback in speakers
Repeatedly blown 20A fuse on engine fuse block
Turns over, but now won't catch

Replaced: Ignition switch & ignition cylinder block, cam sensor, throttle position sensor. Cost: $750

Tried: new battery, unplugging PCM computer, checked all fuses.

And the alternator checked out all right.

Any ideas?...the dealer in stumped. (replacing the PCM computer seems to only have a 50% success rate)

dead battery overnight.
Oct 9, 2014 4:10PM PDT

Thank you all for the helpful posts. I have not read
All so I hope I am not being redundant.

After multiple 100% dead batteries over night on my 2000 gc , I discovered that the light under the hood is tip/rocker switch activated, and the ****** sticks leaving that light stuck on! So far removal of that light has seemed, I repeat, seemed okay. All good for 6 weeks so far. Not sure it is the main issue, but worth considering.
Cheers ya'll, and thanks again!

all symptoms but starter

Dude check all your grounds. Look for corrosion on the ends or broken, make sure its not trying to ground through paint, check battery cables for the same thing. Should be: battery to body, frame to body, battery to engine, engine to frame. Basically anything that has electrical needs a good ground. Needs to have a good functioing ground system for power to work same goes for power but you have a grounding issue. And your starter not catching next time it does it STOP crawl under the jeep and tap on the starter cylinoid listen for a "click" in the cylinoid, either the starter cylinoid is going bad or your missing flexplate teeth. Beting starter needsreplace.... hope I helped
