The end of the stem cell debate as we know it?

Jun 6, 2007 11:33PM PDT
Scientists Use Skin To Create Embryonic Stem Cells.
(Washington Post login: semods4@yahoo.com; pw = speakeasy)

>> Three teams of scientists said yesterday they had coaxed ordinary mouse skin cells to become what are effectively embryonic stem cells without creating or destroying embryos in the process -- an advance that, if it works with human cells, could revolutionize stem cell research and quench one of the hottest bioethical controversies of the decade.

In work being published today, the scientists describe a method for turning back the biological clocks of skin cells growing in laboratory dishes. Thus rejuvenated, the cells give rise to daughter cells that are able to become all the parts needed to make a new mouse. <<

However, I fear this will not in fact end the debate, as deeper in the article it is reported that the stem cells can be used to create both sperm and eggs, and so in fact (not just metaphorically) a clone of the original mouse, or by in vitro fertilization with sperm and and eggs created from different mice. If this holds up with humans, do they have a soul? Will the extreme right-to-lifers declare that the mere cells are "alive," because they have all the potential of a fertilized embryo? Stay tuned...

If you take the suggestion I gave Dragon earlier-
Jun 16, 2007 6:58PM PDT

get and read your own copy of How Can Blood Save Your Life?, your knowledge of both medicine and the bible will be improved. Improved knowledge of the bible gives you an improved understanding of our objections.
"one of the very few, btw,"- In fact Acts 15:20,29 lists just four: "abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood." [KJV]
The meeting whose minutes we're given in Acts 15 was necessary just because Jesus' death had "fulfilled" the old Law contract, and it was necessary to determine which provisions, if any, were still in force. (As you learned if you read this post,
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6130_102-0.html?forumID=50&threadID=251208&messageID=2513560#2513560
the blood law was given to Noah long before the Law was given to Moses.)
Two of those prohibitions protected JWs from HIV long before Jesus was able to go online with CDC ... In fact, long before CDC had a clue. That's a better record than modern medicine's. Healthier, not sicker. Longer lived, not shorter. Freer, not more restrictive.
"taking a prohibition out of context" Your view, not the bible's or ours. The context is Ex 20:2,3 and Isa 48:17,18. We think the results speak for themselves.
Bottom line: You will continue to use blood when it's offered.

of blood in medical procedures. That includes transfusions. There are a few isolated groups who oppose transfusions and other medical practices, but the Bible does not support their views.

BTW, the Bible can be used to support almost anything if verses are misinterpreted and taken out of context.

NON-embryonic stems cell

I tend to keep somewhat abreast of the pro-life matters and as far as I can tell there is no opposition to the research and therapeutic use of NON-embryonic stems cells. But rather embryonic stems cell and abortion which as far as I am concerned deliberately destroys . And that this also serves to teach society that it is acceptable to destroy innocent or helpless Human life simply for convenience.

Apparently we are each of a somewhat different plane of reasoning. But I guess religious or not it is a matter of [apparently] not so common sense, though it should be as common as day. Also, it would simply make life so much easier on all of us if folks would stop acting stupid and get right. Because from start to finish we're all just folks and there's no way out of it. Sometimes I think we simply won't learn to get along with one another until we all become part of the morally and ethically things we fear and hate.

Three important things to know
Jun 13, 2007 11:02AM PDT

1. Who you are
2. Where you are
3. Where you belong

If you don't know the answer to one of these, ask your spouse. She will let you know

But, if you need to ask, better add a 4th question.

"What's gonna happen to me now?" Your spouse knows that one too. Wink

Common sense ought to be the birthright of highly-evolved creatures. Yet according to two recognized authorities on the matter, we've gone 6000 years (Jehovah) or six million (Arthur C. Clarke) without an end to war. As I've often asked here before: Do you have a cunning plan? Let's hear it. If not, don't begrudge me mine.

And this just in: A Swedish organization sees the threat of nuclear war increasing.

When He died on the cross, He voluntarily gave up His physical life. He subsequently took up that life again, and there is no need for Him to voluntarily surrender it again.

I think if you looked a little more closely, you might see

something different. According to the historical record;

Jesus anticipated his death when He deliberately went to Jerusalem for the Passover.

He knew His betrayer, and did not attempt to dissuade the man. Instead, He told the man to get about His business.

He knew His arrest was imminent, but did not leave or hide.

He refused to resist arrest even healing a man who was injured by Peter who tried to use force to resist the arrest.

He refused to defend Himself even though the charges were bogus.

He said that He could summon 12 legions of angels to defend Him at any time, but refused to do so to prevent the crucificion.

He was not killed. He gave up His life when He said "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit".

He proved that all that He had said was true when He took up His life again at the resurrection. He was physically raised from the dead.

Your history is a bit more than lacking.
Jun 18, 2007 2:10PM PDT

There was no spear in the ribs prior to:

"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit".

When the spear was plunged into His side, the text says that a mixture of water and blood came out. That indicated that death occurred prior to the spear thrust.

Being nailed to the cross plus dehydration didn't kill the two criminals crucified with Him. They are not likely to have killed Jesus either since He was active, rational, and engaged with others up to the point of His death. I guess you kind of glossed over all the other indicators already mentioned that point to a voluntary death on the part of Jesus.
