The Details, its all about the details

people dont know they have to set their cable box to the desired res; 720p/1080i for HD and a nice 480p for sd channels.
Also DVD players which go hand in hand with the HDTV must also be adjusted to 480p,
And for the above you need to know about the proper cords

If you even read the manuals, for some products the extra set up procedures are not always there. Cable boxes often require pushing and holding a couple of buttons on the front panel to access the menus to set up for the various formats.

So are youy saying, you have to select 2 formats on the cable box setup? Right now I only have it setup for 1080i

yes one for the HD and one for the SD

Your 1080i is for the HD
now to get rid of the black bars on non hd channels and improve color switch the SD to 480p
