The cursor's curse

Apr 23, 2007 6:48AM PDT

In playing PC games often they tell you that you can move the screen around by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen. I am able to do this with my cursor for the top, bottom and left edge of the screen but for some reason not to the right. This applies to all games. It is not an isolated incident.

The cursor will actually disappear off the screen and will not move the screen to the right when used for gaming. Even now when I move the cursor to the right edge screen it will totally disappear, same actually with the bottom, it will disappear. However the cursor will remain seen at the top edge and at the left edge.

I have the 19" X-Black TFT LCD Monitor by Sony. The model is a SDM-HS95P, manufactured: 2005-45.

Any ideas on how I can make my cursor move the right edge screen in gaming? Help appreciated, thanks.

I've seen that.

The monitor didn't support the setting of the game.

Sadly there are far too few details for me to hazard the settings of the video card and the game.

I see you have another discussion going on and the information is incomplete there.

Ok, thanks.

Thanks for replying anyway.

I was hoping you'd tell more.

Maybe I was too subtle. It appears I can never find the correct way to ask for more detail.

Also, have just discovered through experimentation, that if I move the cusor slowly and just touch the edge of screen then it does move the game screen. But if I move the cursor a little too quickly and push it further then it does not move the screen at all.

You wrote: "The monitor did not support the setting of the game". Yes, but this is not just ONE game setting, this happens with ALL games!

Is there enough detail for you here or is there some other information you require? If so, why don't you spell it out.

And yes, you were too subtle but more sarcastic. I think that would be a fair comment.

If I remember correctly, you were my first message ever in this forum and you wrote this:

"EMAIL does not have to include such information. As such, if you receive such then you should trash it.

Bob".

That particular reply by you wasn't what I called helpful. The other members were very helpful! Sorry, am I beginning to sound like you, sarcastic.

I have a suspicion.

I suspect something about this problem.

It's where you said that moving the cursor to the right, and it disappears completely off the screen.

This happens to me when my Display properties has been set to use two monitors, and I have forgotten to reset it when I turn the other monitor off. I have even lost whole applications that way because Windows still thinks they are being displayed on the 2nd monitor, but I have forgotten about it.

It may be that you don't have a 2nd monitor, but I am not sure if Display properties would still show 2 monitor connections. If it does, and either yourself or someone else has selected the 2nd one, then this could be your problem.

Open Display Properties, (either from the Control Panel or right click the Desktop and select Properties), and click the Settings tab.

If you can see two boxes in the small window marked 1 and 2, and if box 2 is not faded, then your Windows thinks there are two monitors. Select the 2nd box by clicking on it, and at the bottom remove the tick for "Extend Windows desktop onto this monitor".

If that is not the case, then I've just wasted 10 minutes typing this, and a further 10 minutes correcting my typing mistakes, Devil

Dear MarkFlax

I did as you asked and it worked! I thank you wholeheartedly and appreciate very much for your help even though this was a minor problem compared to all the other computer disasters that are out there.

The cursor when it hits the right edge, and I can just barely see the cursor, does in fact move the screen to the right! I tested it out on some of the games and it does work. Thanks! One very minor point though. Why is it that the cursor disappears from sight at the bottom edge and I can just about see it on the right edge, but at the top and left edges the whole cursor is visible?

Is there any way I can adjust this or it's just one of those things?

And, what is the purpose of having two monitor screens in the Display properties? What is this used for?

Anyway, if you are too busy replying to this I will understand. But I am really grateful to you for spending those 10 minutes on solving this cursor problem. And I know what you mean, I too have to check some typing mistakes so I do not appear to be illiterate although, computer illiterate I am.

Thanks very much for your thread and your time on it! Now I am going to have my meal with wine! I happen to be in Italy.

Ahh Italy
Apr 24, 2007 4:32AM PDT

I've heard Italy is a beautiful country, and the people are lovely. I'm jealous, I live in the UK.

Still.... Devil

I'm glad that worked for you. Now your questions;

1] One very minor point though. Why is it that the cursor disappears from sight at the bottom edge and I can just about see it on the right edge, but at the top and left edges the whole cursor is visible?

I'm not sure, but it may be your monitor settings. Do you have visible controls, (a control panel of buttons), on the monitor? If so one of those will set the top/bottom and left/right margins.

2] What is the purpose of having two monitor screens in the Display properties

It's fantastic. My own computer room at home looks like a high-tech computer office. I have two desktops on the desk spaced apart, 4 speakers, (two for each), two Monitors in-between, and only one keyboard and mouse.

The set up is like this: using a KVM switch, (keyboard/video/mouse), I have my main Dell Desktop connected to my primary monitor and also to the secondary monitor, and my second HP Desktop connected to the secondary monitor.

With this set up I can use the keyboard to switch control between the two computers so I can work on both if I want to. Or, I can use the two monitors with the Dell computer side by side. Applications can be stretched across the two monitors to make a super wide display, or I can just move one application off to the right hand monitor and continue working on another application on the left hand one.

Some of the screensavers work across both monitors which although not essential to a fully grown and adult person that I am, is good fun!

Or, I can hide stuff. If I push an application off to the right hand monitor, then turn that monitor off, it is hidden. Er, um.... not that I have anything to hide, but that's good fun as well.

I would really like a 3rd monitor. But I suspect that would be just too much fun.

Control tower at Cape Canaveral?
Apr 24, 2007 6:50AM PDT

Hi Mark

Thanks for your information.

I like the set up you got there in your computer room. It looks like you got your control room at Cape Canaveral set up in your own home! It sounds good. I wouldn't mind trying that out one day.

About the monitor settings, yes I have them on the monitor but still does not do the trick. What I will try out later on is see if the CD software that provided the installation for this Sony monitor has some adjustments I may have overlooked in my rush to get it all set up when I first got my flat screen monitor.

Yeah...I must try out your idea of having two monitors some day, definitely. Glad you told me about that!

I was living in the UK for over 20 years in Baldock, Herts. Now I am at the moment residing in Italy on the coast near Ravenna. I was actually born in Canada with an Italian mother and my father was English.

The women here are very attractive and very stylish. Also I find the Italians are usually very easy to approach and chat. A bit like Northern England. In Southern England they tend to keep to themselves a little more. But each country or area has their plus side and minus side.

Well, I guess I am getting off the subject and I am beginning to "ramble on". I better stop before this site turns into a chat room!

Anyway thanks for your help on the computer and I wish you all the best.

"1] One very minor point though. Why is it that the cursor disappears from sight at the bottom edge and I can just about see it on the right edge, but at the top and left edges the whole cursor is visible?"

The leftmost pixel of the cursor is the active part. its the part that touches each edge of the screen. So you couldnt possibly move it off the left edge of the screen, neither can you on the right. Its just because of the shape and angle of the cursor that it appears you can in fact move it almost off the screen.

"Extend Windows desktop onto this monitor"

This is disabled in my case, but the SAME thing still happens!

Is my computer a house to gremlins?! Sad
