General discussion

The British ''academics'' are at it again.

There's now a democratically elected Palestinian government whose ruling party's platform endorses the extermination of the Jewish state and continued terrorism against Israeli civilians. The Palestinians are still shelling Israel with Kassam rockets, up to eight a day. They're still blowing up innocent people at felafel stands in Tel Aviv. But Israel must be punished.

crap. Israel is conspicuously democratic, where the Palestinian Authority is brand new to the concept. However "freely" Hamas was elected, its goals are genocidal in their aim, and in their execution, which should negate any backlash at Israel. I do wish that the Great Powers after WW2 had had the brains to put some money into buying up Cyprus from its warring inhabitants as a refuge for the Jews, not as a replacement for Israel, but as an addition, a safe haven for Israelis who need to get away for a time to a peaceful Jewish state.

While I may be thought of (wrongly) as a representative of "radical" academic thought, I have never bought into the poor pitiful Palestinian argument. They are poor and pitiful because all the Islamic states bordering Israel have kept them that way deliberately. It was the cruelist political trick since Nazi "resettlement plans" for the Jews, and was inspired by much the same motives. They have an endless supply of desperate and despairing people just waiting to become martyrs. Its rubbish.

But, yes you are correct, and unfortunately the poor Palestinian people have been made the ultimate scapegoats by those Arab countries in their unending determination to keep the Israeli-Palestinian conflict alive in order to take the attention away from their corrupt and totalitarian ways. As long as Israeli Arab dispute dominates the Middle East, these Arab thugs feel the attention is away from them.

What bothers me most is, how the so called 'academics' don't see the root couse of the problem in the Middle East and try to fix it rather than pile on the only truly democratic (albeit not perfect) country in the Middle East?

If you feel that way ...

... why do you align yourself so often with the bitterly anti-semetic critics of the Iraq war? Sheehan, McGovern, Wilson, ...

Hey, if "Palestine" is a state now

and their freely elected government has declared intent to wipe out Israel and has carried out violent acts... doesn't that equate to a declaration of war and free Israel to wipe Palestine off the map?

Sounds like it to me - Go Israel

Speaking of which, hasn't Iran done pretty much the same? Why stop with Palestine? They'd be doing not only themselves a favor, but the rest of the world as well IMO. Added to that, I'd wager much higher chances of success for Israel than any other country. Israel would have the added benefits of more space and oil profits, but would have more border land to defend. Don't know about you, but I'd rather get the oil we need from Israel than anyone else in the Middle East.

Why bother defending borders?

When you can just turn them into an impassable nuclear wasteland?
