General discussion

text in Word

Hello Everyone!

This is SO daft, I feel silly even writing it!
In my Word 2003 programme, the default is set to the type of font I require and the font size is set to 12.

When writing, the font appears to be much larger - maybe about 14.

The item prints out at the right size, and the problem appears to be only the appearance on the Word document when typing.

If I highlight the text and choose font size 12, nothing happens, it stays the same. If I choose a different size, it will enlarge or reduce according to what I choose, but always it is far larger than 12.

This has only recently happened.

To my knowledge, apart from weekly scans by Adaware, Spybot and AVG free 8, I have not downloaded, or altered anything in my computer.

I have W.XP. Prof + SP3

I have browsed through the forum Qs and As, and found nothing that may answer the problem, apart from the Q and A to Fingwing's Q on 14.6.09. which does not assist me. Sometimes in the past, my pasted text has appeared larger, but not on a regular basis.

Thanks in advance for any help to my question, which probably has an easy solution

So this is about WYSIWIG and DPI?
Jun 25, 2009 10:45PM PDT

To match point sizes on the display you would know your screen's DPI and match all this up. Many won't research that and end up frustrated.

There's a bigger problem here and that Word is a poor typesetter. Part of Word's rendering is from your printer driver so when you change printer drivers you see your typeset pages fall apart.

And lastly you have the ZOOM view of the page. All this is well known stuff but can frustrate those that want it to just work.

Bob,

Thank you, yet again, for your help. being well past my sell-by-date and as Alzheimer's appears to have set in, I completely forgot about the dreaded ZOOM! I had checked the printer driver, which had been changed about 3 months before, and tried checking details of the printer - but all was OK.Page set-up was of no help and as the default was set to what I had ordered, I had run out of ideas. (It would be nice to set the font size for about -1 so that no one else can read this very ob vious error on my part.

I shall slink away with my tail between my legs, in disgrace!!

Many thanks.

The question we didn't ask.

Is the one we really want the answer to.

In a roundabout way, if my longish answer was useful in any way then use the one thing that works and ignore the rest.

Thanks, Bob,

Wysiwyg definitely did not apply - I certainly didn't get what I saw, thank goodness! Also, I am not sure that if I had altered the DPI, it would have any more affect on text than it does on a picture. One would have to have pretty good eyesight to evaluate the difference of the same picture at, say, 70 and 250 DPI. At any rate, I did not even consider it - maybe that was an error, but as things turned out, it would not have been of any use - the answer was the ZOOM!!

Colin

Re: font to big

In one of the toolbars at the top (the formatting toolbar, I think) is a box with percentages. It should be set to 100% to see things normal. If anything bigger (say 150%) fonts seem bigger (but ain't, just show).

That's the case with you?

font to big (text in Word)

Hello again Kees,

Bob hit the nail on the head, and thank you for your advice. It was exactly the same as Bob's last line and it was the answer. If you read my reply to him you will see how daft I feel! (how could I forget such an obvious thing like that----?!)

Thank you,

Colin

Re: Word

Most of the time, when somebody sends me a document, it looks OK. Sometimes, Word sees reason to fill the whole screen and set the zoom to 145% or 156% to do so. I really don't know why. It just happens. So I zoom back to normal. And because it's so easy I never have taken the time to find out why it happens. Some things will forever stay a mystery.
But it helps to help others who don't have that particular experience.

Kes,
As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

As is that of Bob. It appears that between you both, my computer problems become memories!!

Kind regards,

Colin
