Testing my processor

Dec 19, 2004 6:17AM PST

Last week my comp got hit with a power surge. The protector didn't work and the computer is broken...so i trouble shooted all the pieces...power supply, vid card, RAM, exc.... I have it narrowed down to the processor or the motherboard. I have a pentium 4 3.0GHz and an intel motherboard (can't remember the # of the top of my head). At home here i have another PC the uses a Pentium 4 so they have the same slot size. What should i do to figure out wether my processor, mother board, or both are broken

Thanks

You said you have another computer with a compatible motherboard? Try the suspect processor in the old computer and see if it works. If it does it's probably the m/board. If it doesn't, it's the processor assuming the old computer works OK.
Personally, I would go to my local computer store and have them run tests rather than risk messing up my rig. If the board is bad, paying a tech to swap boards between your old and new rigs should be cheaper than buying a new board. In other words, they can use any compatible equipment from your old computer and replace the damaged components in the new. I have cannibalized my old rig a couple of times-once for the processor!
