Terrible forum loading time since

Mar 7, 2005 12:26AM PST

the forum changes. I am using dial up, earthlink for 6 years. Using win 98 SE on an old P2L97 PII333. Site worked fine since they first went to the new software, but the change to the name .

I can go to a forum [can take a few seconds or a minute]. I can be in a thread reading posts, read three in a row and then can't get to read the next for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes [absolutely no exaggeration, just listen to me swearing at it].

I'm using a USR full processor modem, Conects report 42k to 44 k. I also have netper sec so can see a graph of "instantaneous" activity. When the page doesn't open there is only a very short burst every little while.

Is it possible that the forum software favors broadband??? Years ago with earthlink [mindspring] had a similar problem and they confirmed that they had rearranged their modems and I was going in dialup to a modem that was intended for broadband. They gave me a different phone number to end the problem.

The present problem is ONLY with the CNET forums.

When I hit the big delays I immediately go to OE and hit send receive to make sure the connection is still good [it always is], I can also go elsewhere.

Have I failed to install some MS patch or?? for networking or dialup or????

Look at...

The number of bytes it now takes to load the forum page. It's about 4 times from the first reincarnation of the new forums. The current view has 3 sides of heavy graphics... These forums may be painful to dialup users.

As such, just take advantage of the forum and topic you need. If you post a question, subscribe to it so you get a notice someone has replied.

subscribe. Simply checking on previous posts takes forever.

Wonder. For the case where I read hree in a row in a single thread and then it takes forever, is it possible then that it has to reload the entire thread ads a nd everything else??

I have an XP computer, faster system and same modem and it isn't anywhere nearly that slow.

But there is no question that it happened when they changed to get rid of the help thing, so it sounds as if your response is correct.

Thanx again. My power supply efficiency stayed the same but my efficiency has plummeted. LOL

The adverts appear to load (retransmit/reload/...) on each page. I can't explain why it seems that way.

Most websites don't do that since it's far more bandwidth on their end too.
