I can login to my server and load the inbox but how can I determine how many unread messages are in my inbox?

Too vague.

OK, so when I select my inbox I get:-
* 3718 EXISTS
* 0 RECENT
* OK [UNSEEN 3713] First unseen.
* OK [UIDVALIDITY 1448559353] UIDs valid
* OK [UIDNEXT 7586] Predicted next UID
* OK [HIGHESTMODSEQ 20506] Highest
Would these results change with different servers or are they an intrinsic part of imap
Can anyone tell me what 'RECENT' actually means and is 'UNSEEN' equivalent to 'unread'?

Again, missing detail.

While telnet to mail servers is out there on the web, I'd like to narrow this down to which mail server you are running as the answer can vary. And yes, the server response could vary from server to server but Read/Unread (Seen/Unseen) has been interchangeable for decades.
