Question

Television HDMI electrical problem

Aug 30, 2015 4:05PM PDT

Cable TV system worked until I recently purchased an LG LED TV.

Connecting the TV to Comcast cable box via HDMI fried the television (burnt a hole in the cable and melted the connector; sparks everywhere).

Here's the evidence so far:

1. LG replaced the graphics board twice. Hasn't fixed the issue.

2. Cable company verified no voltage on COAX and replaced the box. They also verified the unit was correctly grounded.

3. Outlets were verified by certified electrician, and passes an outlet tester for correct wiring.

4. I was able to use the television and HDMI to laptop, and also HDMI to Amazon Firestick. Both worked great. (Don't remember if I had ever plugged in the computer into the outlet while using).

5. THE ONE difference between the old and new televisions is the addition of a ground plug.

6. I also question the difference in HDMI connection pins used in the Firestick, computer, and cable box and if somehow in the power panel in the television (the 1 of two panels they didn't replace; if there is a short running to that particular HDMI cable).

What is the issue?

Still burning hole or the TV just don't work? Since everything has been check or replaced, my solution would be to replace the tv (new item that caused it all). Good luck.

Still burning up the HDMI port.

Thanks for the quick response!

To clarify on the current state:

1. With everything replaced, and TV running fine (plugged in to wall and powered on).
2. With the OK from the electrician for the apartment wiring.
3. I tried plugging cable box HDMI into the TV HDMI socket. This caused sparks to fly, and the HDMI cable male end and the female input end on the TV to melt. Both are no longer usable
4. Fortunately, the television still turns on. However, the HDMI port is not longer operable.

LG has come and replaced the graphics board twice now, and they have given me the all clear both times. I have no idea what else to do.
