Tech question, how much memory is enough in an MP3

May 18, 2006 8:21PM PDT

Player? My instinct is to go for as much as possible, but that costs a lot. Could those of you with experience give me some guidance.

...just defines how many files you can store on it.

So, how many tunes do you want to carry around (and can afford to carry around)? That answer tells you how much memory you should look for.

Equally important are factors such as sound quality and ease of use, including loading files onto the player. The easiest players to use are those which use readily available software such as Apple's iTunes or MusicMatch.

Thanks Jonah, as always As it happens there's an ad

for the review of a 20 gig IRiver MP3 on this very page that is available for under 200 bucks at some retailers. That looks about right and gives me heaps of room for my various interests.

I also saw an ad locally for an all in one Teac Turntable/CD recorder which looks brilliant assuming the specs are tolerable. I've got this wall of records that needs converting, and the price of CD-R's is getting just right.

Except that data CD-Rs are incompatible.

That unit will only record with CDs designated as "music" or "digital audio" (also CD-DA). Those are probably more expensive.
