TDSServ related issue, trying to get the last of it

by twofeets / January 13, 2009 8:20 PM PST

We had a pretty nasty infection earlier today on a system running SP2. One of those beasties that didn't want to let MBAM or others run. It started with a Zafi.B message which I think she clicked. Using some help I have gleaned from other topics on this page I have gotten most of it, I think, but I ran Rooter.exe for rootkits which returned some positive results, and IE is still hijacked, though the popups seem to have gone. In the meantime downloaded Firefox which works OK. Can you guys help? I see some trouble spots in the HJT log but I'm only knowledgeable enough to be a nuisance to myself, as it were. Thank you so much! (malwarebytes, Superantispy, Symantec and AVG all now come back with nothing found, yet the rootkits are still there and there appear to be registry entries too - I'm afraid this is going to reinstall itself)

In reply to: HJT log

Rootkit scan returns these:

Rootkit TDSS ! .. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_TDSSSERV.SYS]
Rootkit TDSS ! .. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_TDSSSERV.SYS]
Rootkit TDSS ! .. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_TDSSSERV.SYS]

But I have no idea how to get rid of them.

Try the folowing.....
by Marianna Schmudlach / January 14, 2009 1:07 AM PST

* Click on Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc and click OK
* On the View menu click on Show hidden devices
* Browse to Non-Plug and Play Drivers and you should see something like TDSSserv.sys
* Highlight that driver and right click on it and select DISABLE - NOT uninstall.
* Now RESTART your computer.

Pls. download and install ATF:

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Under Main choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

* Click Firefox at the top and choose:Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click
* No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

* Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE:If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Update and run MalwareBytesAntiMalware again pls., I see you also have SAS - pls. update and run it again.

Btw. You have AVG8 plus Symantec AntiVirus running - is NOT a good idea - pls. disable one !

Pls. let us know how you are doing.
