tcp optimizer

Mar 6, 2005 11:30PM PST

I recently got tcp optimizer and changed my registry settings with it. Afterwards, I ran Bittorrent, and there doesn't seem to be any improvement in speed at all. Isn't tcp optimizer supposed to make TCP downloads and uploads faster?

your connection type and rated speed, TCP Opt. can give you to big of a RWIN and slow you down. Also your speed with BT depends on other factors, like upload speed from others, # of seeds, so on.

About that...
Mar 8, 2005 1:51PM PST

There are no spyware. The thing is only about 300kb, and I spend hours decompiling the whole thing, trying to figure out exactly what it does. Not a smart thing to do. What a waste of time...

Basically, it just changes MTU value and enlarges acknoledgement windows. It should help on my 5M downstream cable connection, especially when nearly all the bandwidth is saturated. But it doesn't.

BT download depends on other users, but there should be at least a little bit of difference.

I knew so little about networking. Out of my league on this... Can anyone help?

I offer up this challenge.

Go get HIJACKTHIS and post your log from that test.

That's the second time this year I've actually lost this bet.

My hats off to you for what looks to be a clean machine.

Another thought. Is there a router in this setup? Sometimes it's the firmware... Or WEP or a firewall checking every packet???

So...If an AV isn't running then what is McAfee doing???
Mar 28, 2005 9:06AM PST

Funny though if there is "supposedly" no AV running then what is McAfee AV doing running in the runing processes? All of these processes are running and all of them are part of McAfee AV. For those people who don't know what these processes do here they are:

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe

- the automatic update process for McAfee. It checks to make sure their software is up to date and protecting you from new threats that make their way into the wild.

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\mcshield.exe

- Scans every file being opened and every running process to provide you with "On-Access" protection. This is one of the core processes to McAfee.

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\vstskmgr.exe

- Needed by installed antivirus to protect your computer from viruses, spyware and other malicious programs

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\SHSTAT.EXE

- Handles program communication among VShield components, displays VShield icon. Can be started automatically or available via Start -> Programs

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\UpdaterUI.exe

- McAfee AntiVirus Enterprise Updater

I have a router, but...
Mar 28, 2005 3:18PM PST

I have a router, but this machine is set as DMZ host on it. I'm involved in anime fansubbing, and seed a lot of torrents 24 hours a day. Can't have the incoming signals blocked. The newer Bittorrent clients selects a random port from a large range, in order to prevent ISP upload throttling of TCP in standard Bittorrent ports. Forwarding that many ports just won't work. So I sat up DMZ.

Do you know anything about the tcp optimizer? Or why it doesn't work for me?
