Question

TB Box Video/Audio Output to Laptop Screen

May 11, 2015 11:56AM PDT

Hi everyone,

I have a TV box (media player) which I'm trying to output it's audio and video to my laptop so it displays from my laptop monitor and the audio emits from my laptop also.

I bought a USB to HDMI adapter from monoprice but it's not working out for me.

Does anyone know of any solutions or suggestions to get this working?

Thanks!
Dan

If this is HDMI from the TV box you have to get into Blackmagic HDMI devices. But those do not let you record or view protected content. See if the price sets you off before you go further.

Sorry, meant TV box in the title.

The price is a little high, any other solutions? If I wanted to record on the laptop I can just use camtasia studio to record the laptop monitor...which is actually what I'm trying to do bc I need to create tutorial videos on the product for my company.

Thanks!

Still don't see the gear in question.

Recording HDMI is a minefield of issues. Remember that's well discussed so I only summarize.

In short, if the source is HDMI it may be protected and won't record. Since it's just training the quality can be so-so. Just point a camera at it and record.

The recoding part is simple, as long as I can get the output from the box to my laptop monitor OR if there's some sort of way to hook up an external monitor to the laptop and simultaneously connect it to the TV box somehow..there must be a relatively simple solution for this.

Since I see no details.

It's all guesswork. However the number of times folk have asked about HDMI input to laptops makes that a completed question. Nothing has changed. HDMI involves a lot of copy protection so it's very much a dead end that I can't guess why folk continue to turn down that street. (no exit!)

Since you are not revealing the TV box make/model and more we can't move forward.

Again, it's not as if you need a 1080p capture. It's just for training so point your camera at it to get the snippet you need.

If it must be HD contact the owner of the video to get it with the rights and more.

Yes the recording part is simple, if...

there is something to record. But here's the problem, if the contents are copy protected then the contents might not come through the BOX when a recorder is attached at the output. That's what copy protection is all about.

Well, thanks for all of the responses anyway. I can't reveal the company info for obvious reason but I suppose I can set up a tripod, the quality doesn't matter as much (ie, doesn't have to be in 1080p).
