taskmgr.exe uses too much CPU!

by Paks / March 29, 2004 8:44 PM PST

I have a WinXP Home Edition(OEM), when I look at the task manager, I notice that the process taskmgr.exe increases my cpu by 50-60%. This actually goes wild when computer is idle and that there are no applications running. My RAM is 261MB, fully defragged, clean of adware\spyware, no viruses\trojans, this happens at any time online or offline. Please give me some lovin' (8{=

"when I look at the task manager, I notice that the process taskmgr.exe increases my cpu by 50-60%"

Absolutely correct behaviour.

I see nothing to fix.

Let me write a little more.

As stated in your post and why I quoted it, this is how I've seen Task Manager perform in every version of Windows. When you open it or look at it, it spikes the CPU. Apparently, since it received the "windows focus" it must now inquire about what's going on and present information. As such you may see it spike up to even near 100%

Here's a few items worth trying if it doesn't subside to a few percent after a few minutes.

1. Turn off indexing. Look up BLACK VIPER on GOOGLE to see what service to stop/disable.

2. Turn off DMA and turn it back on. A Microsoft'ism is that this setting might display as "on", but really be "off." Here's the article on how to flip this off/on -> http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/tech/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

3. Run DISK CLEANUP. Even if you haven't disabled the COMPRESS FILES feature (read http://support.microsoft.com/?id=812248 so you don't think it's broken.)
