I understood about the square brackets, etc,...just didn't know which characters in the long URL could be omitted or where to truncate.

I doubt anyone doesn't understand the need or convenience of short URL's, but I also feel if we wouldn't attempt to embellish or slant/spin an article in our introduction of the link, we would overcome the problem at the outset,ie, keep the introduction under ten words.
