Comparing a mono shotgun mic
Dec 26, 2013 6:15AM PST

to a stereo mic is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are fruit. One tastes different from the other. Both are good for you.

In the case of these two mics, one is directional, one does stereo, both are mics.

I won't even get started on the fact that you are using a dSLR (designed to capture still images) to capture video (arguably a convenience feature on a dSLR)...

Personally, I use different mics for different reasons. The shogun mic is for dialog (Audio Technica AT875R). The stereo mic (Audio Technica AT825) is for music and foley. There is no single best mic. For all we know a wireless lavaliere is what you really need...

DeadCat

First of all buy a windshield (deadcat) for your mic, this will take care of any wind noise. I made my deadcat from some aquarium filter foam and teddy bear faux fur. Not difficult and works great.
Second IMO a mic on a camera is a waste of time (unless you have no other option) Put the mic on an extension lead and locate near the source of the sound. Its that sound you want not any ambient sound around the camera.
I would look at the Rode video mics for best quality.

Good stuff.

For the indie (no budget) I find we can fashion wind noise reduction out of many things. I even tossed a towel over a mic one time and it was enough. It's all about being creative.
