General discussion

Taking high school prom picture, etc.

Sep 21, 2005 10:55AM PDT

Without Photoshop or other digital imaging tools available for the general public to use, what advice do you have to take decent high school prom photos or wedding photos?
Low speed film with a flash as an example?

My wife and I took identical photos while inside the Sophia Mosque while in Turkey this past may. My wife had a neat Olympus Stylist 33mm camera and Kodak Gold 400 speed film. I was using a Canon S400 digital camera with the flash turned off. My photos were good. My wife's photos looked like she had shot through a sand filter. Just aweful!
By the way, even using photoshop, trying to get anything from my wife's film photos was useless.

Thoughts and solutions?

Start by not using film. A digital camera in auto mode will

solve many problems immediately. Most people don't know how to use a flash. They are probably better off without it. If a preview shows the need, it can be turned on to gauge its effect. Do not use the built in flash.

When shooting at a prom or wedding with a flash, you need to know the specification for your flash coverage.

The Canon S400 has a flash range of 11.4 feet (with no zoom).
You will need to check your specs for the film camera to find its range.

Many people assume that a flash will light up a large area. Have you ever noticed how many flashes go off at a night football game.

If what you are photographing is outside the range of your flash, turn the flash off. Then the camera will try to compensate for the available light. It will likely choose a slow shutter speed, which means you will have to hold the camera very steady, or use a tripod.

One tip......when you use any zoom, your flash coverage distance drops. So, do not use zoom....just position the camera closer to the subject.

If you use the digital camera for the prom/wedding, and the camera has selected a higher than normal ISO setting, plan on using a noise filter on the photo files. It will improve the photos.

I use the free Noiseware Community Edition from
www.imagenomic.com

You might try using that noise filter on your wife's photos from the Sophia Mosque.
