Tagging new uncompressed music files before burning

Nov 3, 2006 1:08AM PST

I'm converting my old vinyl to CD, and I'm trying to keep maximum quality. I'm recording the vinyl signal uncompressed, and I've been using Sony's SonicStage to burn audio cds with .cda format. I'm on an XP Professional box. I can work with .wav files, and burn the cd as .cda. What I cannot do is figure out how to tag the .cda files with track number, track name, artist, album, etc. I've also started using Audacity to clean up some of the pops and clicks, but Audacity doesn't seem to have a tagging function, either. The software packages I can find are all geared toward compressed files. Anyone know a tagging software package for .wav or .cda? I would hope that if I can tag the .wav, it will carry over. What about files in excess of 2 Mb? Is there an alternative to .wav?

The content is not from digital media so tagging will be

Done MANUALLY.

Look up MP3 tag editors on google.com since I've found few that will like what I use.

Also, WAV files don't have tags so that's a non-starter. What I find most will accept (except diehards) are 192 and higer bitrate MP3s. Since AudioCD bitrate is noted at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Book_(audio_CD_standard) what you can use is a VBR encoding with as high a top end as you can.

I will never engage in encoding discussions as to quality since those discussions are never fun. But I will share how I solved this. Your choice.

Slightly OT but still a Tagging question
Nov 13, 2006 4:50AM PST

I have a similar issue/question regarding track tag's and iTunes music library.

But first, Manually Tagging tracks - How is this done??!! I have found that if you select the mp3 file properties, select the 'summary' tab and click the advanced button, I can manually change some of the 'display' information associated with an mp3 file. Is this where the 'tag' info is stored???

My purpose to needing to do this is I am what is referred to as a 'Tape Trader' in the Jam band scene. These are legaly recorded audience copies of concerts for bands such as Widespread Panic. The band actaully allows fans to come to the show and record the show with their own recording equipment. So these are legal copies of concerts and legally obtained by trading. Its a grass roots kind of thing.

Anyway, when I attempt to add these files to my iTunes library, they don't get categorized properly by album, artist, track name, even track number is out of order. I'm thinking its the way the file is tagged and have changed the Summary info manually. this seems to help, but albums are still split up with tracks randomized in under multiple albums of the same name. I've been working on this for a while, but manually changing all these files is pain stakingly slow!

Is there a better way to change this properties 'summary' info?

I know iTunes has it's 'Get Info' function which allows to you rename tracks and add info from within iTunes, but this doesn't seem to help the album organization. I originally thought that if I created band folders and album folders within, etc, in the same fashion as the iTunes library, that this would solve my problem. Man, was I wrong.

I'm convinced it's the tag information, but still want to find a way to edit that info in some way that will allow me to mass edit information within a specific directory, like add album title to all tracks within that directory, etc.

Do I have to write a program myself that will do that? Hmmmm..... (I am a programmer... doh!)

Is there such an animal in existence???

Signed,
