Table of FIGURES / AUTHORITIES

I am donig my Office exam and I can create, edit etc. this tables but can not understand when should I use them and what for do they exist? Help please, or have you got any link to related information? Thank you.

Kanaps.

These tables are there to help the reader of a large
document to find figures and citations. Just like an index, and a table of contents.

If you feel your document is complete without adding such helpings, don't use them.
