sytem shuts down & restarts

I am running win xp pro, after a few minutes a dialoge box appears saying the system will shut down and restart in 30 seconds it shows a second countdown. any help on how to rid the problem

That's the SASSER or similar worm.

If the dialogue box says Remote Procedure Call, then it's a blaster worm, which makes it difficult to download a removal tool (available from Symantec), before you restart. Try Administrative Tools>computer management>Services> RPC> Properties>Recovery tab. On first second and third failure dialogue box change all three settings to 'Take no Action'.
