System Won't Boot

Sep 3, 2006 4:51AM PDT

I reformatted my hard drive, installed windows xp pro, then few programs, all worked well untill I've installed SP2 off MS site. The PC froze once the setup needed to reboot - everything clased out and only the blue wallpaper and mouse was visible. I've manually rebooted the system and it kept on becoming stuck on the windows xp loading screen. I've attempted to enter windows in few different mode (FCool but it kept becoming stuck. I don't recall on which module it became stuck as the safe mode displays what is being currently loaded. I then entered my BIOS and only changed the Plug and Play OS setting to enable and then after identifying my CD and HD the system got stuck again. Now nothing happens as I turn it on. I don't have different RAM to test or processor but I took all of the other component out and disconnected the HD and cd-rom but only the CUP fan is working. However, if I connect the HD, it appears that its being turn on and then off again in a loop. Same occurs if I plug in the cd-rom, it is being constantly turned on and off. There is no video or anything. I've also attempted to take out the battery on the motherboard to reset the board BIOS, yet always the same story.

System:
Asus A7S333
256 MB Ram
AMD 1800+

Does anyone have any suggestions as what could be the cause? I have never gotten such problem before with any system.

Freezing, rebooting can be a sign of...

An overtaxed power supply, overheating parts (not limited to the CPU) or failing motherboard capacitors. Check those areas.

Why would HD/cd-rom behave like this
Sep 3, 2006 8:18AM PDT

Well everything worked fine as far as I was aware until I've installed the SP2, now I cen't even get anything on the screen. The CPU fan spins and if I connect either the HD or cd-rom they are only constantly being turned on and right off, then on and off again in a loop. No video or anything...

Repeat the steps.

But as the unit warms up it can fool us into believing it's SP2. Of course the number of times I find it's not SP2 has me write that's a dead end.

Try starting over with another reinstall. If you can, get an XP install CD with SP2 already included or get the SP2 update on a CD.

Before applying any updates, make sure you've installed your mobo's chipset drivers and the system is fully stable.

If the PC works fine after the reinstall, the issue is with an update. If it's still wonky, your hard drive may have failed. (My last hard drive failed and I didn't know it until I reinstalled windows. Evidently the 'bad spots' weren't in a crucial area but when I reinstalled the bad areas made themselves known lound and clear.)

This happened to me last night. I actually used my XP CD (bootable) and booted from it. I selected the option to Repair an existing installation. Once I got to the console prompt, I just typed exit. Once I rebooted, I got a Blue Screen and the message that the system was restoring my previous configuration and then it went into Windows but I got the error that the system was unstable because SP2 did not install fully. I then went to control panel and removed SP2 and rebooted. Everything worked fine and the system came up with my previous config, before applying SP2. I did the SP2 install from Windows Update again and now everything is working fine. Hope this helps.

But the PC won't even turn on....
Sep 6, 2006 1:30PM PDT

I know what to do - how to fix this windows problem but like I keep saying, once I press the power button, the fans turn on and everything appears normal but no video shows up on the screen and the HD or the cd-rom is constantly being turn on and off...the posts above explain what I did and now what has happened. Nothing shows up on the screen - I can't see anything so I can't enter BIOS or anything! Thus, since it was working fine until I wanted to reboot after installing SP2 - it froze, then kept freezing on the loading screen so I rebooted and went to BIOS and changed the Plug and Play OS to enable and rebooted with saving changes - NOW nothing shows up on the screen, the HD or cd-rom turns on and off depending which I connect as primary master. Even if I disconnect everything from the board nothing shows up on the screen (only leaving the video card in), tried to take out the battery to reset BIOS but still no luck....its so odd that I don't know what is the problem and I don't have spare parts to determine what is wrong...that's why I'm asking...

Since windows is not running at that time..

It's not a SP2 issue. The symptoms are typical of failing parts. The thing that most want to know is which one. I use the tried and true method of starting with minimum parts and getting the machine to beep. Then I add 2 parts to build up to where it fails.

Older machines will not give up the answer about the power supply so easy so we always toss a monster size power supply in early in that game.

Windows XP Pro may be causing your problems
Sep 9, 2006 1:46PM PDT

It is my understanding that Windows XP Pro is not able to run with 32 bit software as it's a 64 bit OS. In booting up, it may freeze due to XP Pro trying to load 32 bit drivers. You might want to do some reading on Windows XP Pro or just visit Microsoft's Website to read more about this OS. The new Vista will apparently be able to run both 32 and 64 bit software but don't quote me on it as you know Microsoft is not the most reliable source or OS
