SYSTEM RESTORE (Vista) does NOT work...

Sep 3, 2010 7:40AM PDT

I have an HP Pavilion s3020n desktop. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.0 GHz, 1.00 GB ram. Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

EVERY time I attempt to use System Restore, restore system files and settings opens, stating that no restore points have been created. To turn System Restore on and create a restore point open SYSTEM PROTECTION. (I click)
System Properties opens up to the System Protection tab and gives me the option of creating the first new restore point. I get this error message when I do this;
The restore point could not be created for the following reason:

The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation. (0x8004230F) Please try again.

*Please note, System Restore DID work at one time, a long time ago, but I cannot tell you when about it stopped work. It has been at least since the beginning of 2010, but I could not determine for myself a close timeframe.

Appreciate any assistance, Thank you.

The usuals.

This area seems to fail with Symantec and a few other security products.

I'll leave you to google "The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation. (0x8004230F)" but will wait for you to tell more about Norton and if you tried the old disable then re-enable SR tricks.

I will google now, per your suggestion, but meanwhile, I am not using Norton, Symantec,...what I am using is AVG free for virus, IObit Security 360 for malware, and Zone Alarm for security.

There was an issue with ZA and system restore not long ago.

I wonder if the old uninstall ZA, turn SR off then on then reinstall ZA will bring it back.

The other problem I see is that IOBIT has overlapping protection with AVG free. "Real-time protection" may not be a good thing since AVG also has some malware and such components. I'd check and ask in the CNET Spyware forum if this combination is recommended.
