System restore scandisk nightmare

Jun 12, 2010 3:49AM PDT

I am trying to fix my friend PC with Win7 ultimate edition.
Not much exp with this OS still. Plain

Main problem that sheduled scandisk fails at boot and offers system restore in very informative error.
I managed to find system restore tool and started it, but it fails to run and suggests scandisk.
This is epic *.
So what should I do!?

Ask them if they used a Windows Activator.
Jun 12, 2010 4:06AM PDT

I'm seeing that error as the activator fails.

I'm sure they will.

But runnng chkdsk from the Windows 7 DVD is documented. You mention scandisk which hasn't been around for over a decade now.

I wonder if they installed some one else's scandisk?

Ask them.

chkdsk or scandisk
Jun 12, 2010 6:43AM PDT

Maybe I messed up with names. I man that default DOS program which sometimes autostarts with win7, to check that last decade file system or that other even older than M$ itself file system for errors.

DOS is not used here.
Jun 12, 2010 11:44AM PDT

There is a command line but it is not DOS and there is no scandisk command. Sorry but something is not stock here. Ask them if they installed someone else's defragger.

>There is a command line but it is not DOS
It IS DOS all commands same just few.

>there is no scandisk command.
Simply I wrote wrong it is chkdsk, same like here:

And that * is not working and suggest system restore and system restore asks to do chkdsk first. So question is what kind of * developed this *?

The dirty volume question.
Jun 12, 2010 9:58PM PDT

Is well discussed.

As this discussed is now polluted by SCANDISK which is not in use and DOS which is no more here why not start a new discussion with everything all corrected?

Example question -> Why would CHKDSK call a volume dirty?

Also there is a big discussion about CHKDSK not being able to correct errors. I know that area too well and the answer is that it can't correct all errors.

To be fair, fschk in linux can't fix it all either. When we reach that point your savvy user knows what to do.

In Linux
Jun 14, 2010 7:03AM PDT

fschk in Linux CAN fix it all and much faster.

That's a bold assertion.
Jun 14, 2010 7:11AM PDT

Since my friends and I have experienced disk corruption that fschk in Linux could not repair you must be one lucky fellow.

Lucky!?

You need much MUCH more luck when you use outdated 16 years old IT technology like ntfs.

My advice is
Jun 14, 2010 9:00PM PDT

Start a new discussion with corrected content, and a clear statement of the issue and finally, the question.
