System Restore Questions

Mar 17, 2005 7:45AM PST

Sometimes when I have chosen to undo a restore, I get a message before the operation begins and my computer gets shut down telling me that System Restore will undo the following: giving the date and time of the point to be undone.

But other times I do not get this information. Instead, when I click that I want to undo a point, System Restore doesn't inform me of what point is being undone but just goes ahead and "undones" it. Then, when my computer boots up I get a message telling me what point was just undone.

I wonder why System Restore acts differently in this situation?

Also, is there some simple way to see what the current restore point is? I presume I can find out by going to Restore to an earlier time and using the calendar provided to see what the last restore point is, but I'm wondering if there is a simpler way.

Thanks, grandpaw

When you choose to restore

you get a calendar with possible restore points in bold type. If you click on one of those days, it will show what is available. The most common entry I have a system checkpoint which is the automatic restore point created by the program. If you have created a restore point or performed a system restore, it will be on the list for that day. Why do you have a variety of messages when using the program? I can't answer that. Fortunately, I don't need to use it that often.

Grandpaw, A Suggestion...

Try NOT to become so well versed in using System Restore. It should be used as an emergency measure only. On most of our office XP machines, I've NEVER used it. ON my home computer, which I experiment with a little more, I've use SR twice in 1 1/2 years..In my experience, it seems to work the same way each time.

In regards to which restore point is the most recent...I check the "Calendar" just like you.

Hope this helps.
