system restore not working ???

Jul 24, 2010 1:42AM PDT

have never gotten my system restore to work successfully for several years. I have the system restore check points clearly visible and highlighted. I click on the desired restore to date but after a minute or so it comes back "cannot restore compute to that date" and chosing any of the other restore check points results in the same message. My computer is setup in the menu to allow system restore. I have a Dell computer with Norton anti virus and windows xp home. In system properties system restore is NOT checked for turned off and max disk space is allowed for system restore space. any other areas to check for the problem why it isn't restoring ??? Any help would be appreciated, thanks Gerry of Philadelphia ....

Nortons.
Jul 24, 2010 5:10AM PDT

I know that some Nortons products disable System Restore in favor of it's own backup and restore components.

I don't know if your Nortons does that, but maybe an avenue to pursue?

Many possibilities...
Jul 25, 2010 3:02AM PDT

Gerry,

There are many possible causes of such issues, but a good starting point is to disable running services and processes that are not required. Since the restore points exist, this will help determine if they are corrupt or if something is running in the background while you perform the restore that is interfering with the process.

Go Start->Run and enter msconfig to control startup items. Under the Startup and Services tabs, unchecked/disable all non-Microsoft listings that are not absolutely required, including security software. Disconnect your internet/network connection and restart your computer. Once restarted, try creating a new restore point manually and restoring your computer to it.

Once the test is complete, go back into msconfig, reenable all of the Startup and Services entries you disabled, and restart the computer again.

Let us know how that goes.

Temporarily Disable Norton Tamper Protection
Aug 12, 2010 8:42AM PDT

Hi gerrycaya,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

The problem you are having with completing a System Restore can be caused by a protection feature in Norton products called Norton Product Tamper Protection. Contrary to what other users say, Norton products Do Not disable System Restore. The tamper protection is a security features that locks down certain system files and Norton files so that they cannot be exploited by threats. To carry out a System Restore, please follow the instructions in the document below.

Thank you,

I disagree.
Aug 12, 2010 8:49AM PDT

I've run into this and found Norton to never pop up a warning that it (Norton) is why system restore has failed.

Symantec has yet to deliver a fix to this to make this so easy my mom can fix this issue.

Until Symantec fixes this issue I can't recommend their products. I've seen far too many reload the OS which this setting was interfering without telling the use why.

PS. Interference item number 2.
Aug 12, 2010 8:52AM PDT

When Norton expires many folk discover the internet connection is blocked.

AGAIN WITHOUT NOTICE WHAT SOFTWARE IS BLOCKING ACCESS.

Symantec's responses to these issues have failed the market.

correct solution to this problem
Aug 12, 2010 10:19AM PDT

Mike York from Norton Solutions team had the solution. It was a matter of turning off all running programs, turn off internet connection, and disabling Norton product tamper protection under settings then misc settings. Be sure to click apply afterwards, then ok. see the norton thread and link in this group..... Gerry of Philadelphia ....
