System Restore doesn't activate when it should

by jerryrm / August 11, 2005 8:08 AM PDT

I have WinXP home, sp2.

I want to do a SR, but when going through the wizard, I get to the point where I click "next" on the confirmation page and the hour glass comes up for a few seconds and then nothing happens. At that point the computer is to shut down and restart, but it won't do it. Suggestions? Thanks.

Can you explain
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / August 11, 2005 8:13 AM PDT

why you want to do a System Restore?

It may give a clue to your problems.

What steps do you take to protect against hackers, viruses, spyware and adware?

You could try a System Restore in Safe Mode.

System Restore problem

I want to restore to see if I can recover lost bookmarks on Mozilla browser. I have no idea of how I lost them, but thought the restore might get them back.

I have tried in safe mode but with the same result. The wizard goes through the process and then won't complete it.

I checked and have the space for restore on max so that shouldn't be a problem.

Just for info.

I finally found a way to cripple SR and the error message didn't tell you why. I reduced the free space on the drive to just a 100 megabytes. SR would then give a non-informative "could not restore."

Hope it helps.

If you want to restore your bookmarks, there is an easier way to do that. Mozilla keeps a profile file, and sometimes creates a separate file, such as 'profiles 2' etc. If you open that file,'defaults'> Profile, you should find 'bookmarks.html'. Then just import it. Hope this helps.

System Restore doesn't complete

Thanks for the thought. Had my hopes up, but there is no Profile 2 or any other profile for Mozilla that I could find; nor is there any file called bookmarks.html. I'm afraid its gone unless a way can be figured out to do system restore.

I did check Norton protected recycle bin and it wasn't in there, but I'm not sure if there is another recycle bin it may have gone to and, if so, how to get to it.

system restore now works--sort of
by jerryrm / August 11, 2005 5:20 PM PDT

After running Norton System Works, SR now works; but, I sure don't know why. However, it didn't do what I had desparately hoped it would--restore my disappeared Mozilla bookmark file. If there is another idea, I'm sure open. I did check the Norton Protected Recycle Bin without luck.

Windows Update Bug

If your problem occured right after the most recent windows security update. You are not alone. I had to clean install. I believe it reacted badly to some third party desktop utilities I got over at download.

OK, so now I have a big blue e for the file in my Mozilla profile for the bookmark file. When opened, all it says is:

Bookmarks Toolbar Folder

So is there anyway to find lost files and recover them?
