System Restore - CCleaner

Jun 14, 2010 12:57AM PDT

Do not understand why my System Restore frequently will not restore.

I used Ccleaner because I had installed a few programs and uninstalled some. (Computer had been working fine before that). I rebooted and could not get back online. I had saved what I had deleted in Ccleaner and put it back into the registry. I rebooted and still could not get back on line. Then I tried two restore points, one from earlier yesterday ?that did not work?and one from a couple of weeks ago and that did not work. Then I went to Safe Mode and chose last known good configuration, and that did not work so I left to scream for a while, and unplugged the computer from the wall thinking that might help it. Guess I will have to delete all of my restore points when I do get back online and restart them again. Got back two hours later but still could not get online. Sometimes in the past unplugging the computer helped a lot.

So I called Verizon, got someone in India and they could not connect me on the Ethernet so we tried USB. Still no luck. Tried my ISP again and again got someone in India and they couldn?t help me. Finally today 6/14/2010 10:45:29 AM, I called my ISP again and talked with a lady in Canada and she was able to connect me.

So, I guess the bottom line is that Ccleaner messed me up so do not plan on using it again, but still do not understand why my restores do not restore.

There are many reasons System Restore does not work.

Norton by Symantec and other security suites break system restore. Same story for a lot of malware.

There is some talk that Microsoft should be more draconian about this and never allow any software to tread into system restore. But that's a discussion for another forum.

Since your post is light I'll leave you with this link -> http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html

Norton does NOT "break System Restore
Jun 14, 2010 3:46AM PDT

Hi Bob,

Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team chiming in here.

I wanted to provide you and everyone else with the correct information about Norton products and the Windows System Restore feature. Norton products contain a security feature called "Norton Tamper Protection" that prevents other programs from making changes to it, so that the active protection "Auto-Protect" is always monitoring systems for threats. In order to carry-out a System Restore this feature needs to be temporarily disabled. Below are the instructions to temporarily disable this feature for Norton AntiVirus, Internet Security and Norton 360.

How to perform a System Restore with Norton 360 installed

How to perform a System Restore with Norton AntiVirus or Internet Security 2010 installed

Thank you,

Mike

Nice save.

This issue is an old one and while your presented it well the fact remains that folk that install this product are presented with the message about restore failures and no where does a message appear how to correct it.

Your product fails for many in that they end up at service counters worldwide over this.

But "nice save".

System Restore - Norton

Bob, since I do not have Norton no longer, any ideas why my restores do not restore? Thanks much.

More clues would be needed.

But any restore point that had a date when Norton was installed should fail to restore (in my exeperience.)

-> But why are you looking to use System Restore? Maybe we can fix what's gone wrong?

I was trying to use Sysem Restore, Bob, as I could not get back on line after using Ccleaner. I am back now until my ISP kicks me off again. Happy

I would have to agree with Bob here.

The problem is that most normal users, (me included), would not understand what "Norton Tamper Protection" does. It sounds good, but when we head over to System restore to restore the system to an earlier point and it fails, there is nothing to suggest why it failed. No Norton pop-up, no clues.

So, we have to turn this Tamper Protection off before we can access System Restore properly.

May be some warning message to tell us that "Norton has detected an attempt..." or other would be useful?

Thank you so much. I had unstalled (Or is it uninstalled?) Norton several weeks ago.

We would need to know
Jun 14, 2010 5:40AM PDT

Hi foxygrandma.

We would need to know how the Canadian Help Line operator managed to get your system back online.

Without that we would be waving in the dark with ideas and guesses.

What I suspect though is a combination of circumstances. You installed then uninstalled some programs. Was the computer able to go online immediately after you uninstalled those programs? What programs were they, and how many did you install/uninstall at the one time?

Using CCleaner is fine for deleting temporary files that build up over time. It does have a simple registry cleaner, but like all registry cleaners we recommend that users use these with utmost caution! In fact we suggest that users stay away from registry cleaners.

Why did you feel you had to use CCleaner's registry cleaner option?

If you now have a stable computer that accesses the internet without difficulty, and it has no other problems, you could get rid of all the existing System Restore points then immediately create a new restore point, and this 'should' be available to return your system to a good order if needed in future.

To do that, open the System Properties dialog window. 2 ways of doing that. Either right click "My Computer" and select Properties, or go to the Control Panel and open "System" from there.

In the System Properties dialog window click the System Restore tab. In there find the option to "Turn off System Restore"; it may also add, "...for all drives". Tick that and click Apply then OK.

That disables System Restore and deletes all System Restore backup files.

Now, return to System Properties and the System Restore tab, remove that tick, then click Apply then OK. That re-enables System Restore.

Finally, goto Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and then click System Restore. The System Restore Wizard opens.

Follow the instructions to create your new System Restore point.

Hope that helps and that you have no further problems.

System Restore - CCleaner

Do not recall everything that she did, but she had me unplug the ethernet from the modem and the laptop, then turn off the modem, and a bunch of other steps. Anyway she did what the ones from he other country couldn?t. In fact they told me I needed a new modem. Then they told me a supervisor would have to call me the netx morning at 8 AM. Well, one did call but at 9 PM. Well, anyway it?s working now again.

Uh, Oh, do not recall the programs I uninstalled but I installed Avant Browser (which I have not used yet), AVS image converter, Belarc Advisor, Cozi, which I just uninstalled as I not remember why I installed it. Maybe my problem is that I see a program from Gizmo?s freeware or especially Giveway of the day?where they cost from $25 to $100?but free if you install within 24 hours. I think to myself that I will try them when I have the time but sometimes the ?time? does not get here.

I used Ccleaner as I had installed and uninstalled and thought I needed to use it, I guess to fix my registry. But will not use it again, and guess I do need to stay away from registry cleaners. Think I used one recently also from Glary Utilities.

Thank you. I did that, which I have done before and still when I need it, does not restore, generally. Will see what happens the next time I need to use it.

Thank you, Mark. Usually I have just chosen the C Drive but will also include now the other drive, Recovery D.
