is that those pests can be restored as well. I don't think that method is good for virus control. Do you have a good anti virus product and is your system clean? Sometimes it's necessary to disable system restore in a repair effort. Try that and do a reboot. Then, re-enable the system restore function to see if that helps. If not and, not knowing much about your system, what viruses, etc. have occurred, I can offer that it's possible to do a repair installation to correct Windows issues. You need the XP CD and the product ID code. You boot from the CD and, instead of doing a full installation, you select the repair option. It's not always easily found if you're not accustomed to running this CD. If you elect that method, I believe all restore points might be lost. That's not so bad. The repair installation does not generally cause loss of data or other programs...it just fixes Windows. If you do this method, you will need to go through the Windows update process afterwards.
Another thought might be to check for file corruption by using the chkdsk function. This is done by going to Run and typing "command" (without quotes). A window should appear showing the command line. type "chkdsk /f" again....no quotes. Reboot the machine. It will go through a process of checking for file integrity before loading. Good luck.
I have a 300gb (D)drive and an 80gb (C) drive. There have been a number of occasions in the recent past when due to virus infestation or software failure I have wanted to use the System Restore function. The system restore opens , I select my earlier date and the process commences but within a few seconds the progress bar shoots to the end, the PC shuts down and restarts and then I get a message that it has not been possible to restore to the selected date. It doesnt matter what date I select, I cannot restore my system. In the belief that all the background processes and programmes were interfering with the restore process I initially tried closing them all down but I still cant get system restore to work. As a final effort I thought I would try using system restore whilst the machine was in safe mode. This worked fine on one occasion but I now find that I cannot get into safe mode. If I press F8 or F12 on boot up nothing happens except that the PC boots up normally. So I guess I have two problems. 1. Cant use Sytem Restore and 2. Cant access safe mode. Can anyone help me please. Many thanks Wayne
