System Restore

by dcrap / January 24, 2008 1:54 AM PST

I've been trying to learn how to back-up my PC. I have windows XP and am using a usb external hard drive to hold my document and setting files. I now go to start/all programes/accessories/system tools/ at which point it says internet explorer (no add-ons)what has happened to the rest of my all programes? I thought that I could use system restore to take the pc back to a time when I would have this programes. Thanks

"I thought that I could use system restore to take the pc back to a time when I would have this programes" doesn't make it clear..

Have you tried restarting the computer into Safe Mode, log in as the "administrator" login, then find the "start/all programes/accessories/system tools/system restore" link.

How To Start In 'Safe Mode'

Hope this helps.

And Did You Try The Administrator Login Route??

...It's not necessary to send error reports to Microsoft although it's an option you can choose.. It seldom solves your issue.

So..did you try using System Restore per the instructions I gave? And if so, do they allow you to restore back to something earlier than 2 weeks? Sometimes, when a particular user profile is corrupted, it's possible to use a different one to restore from.

Hope this helps.

If your instructions said to go into safe mode and restore to an earlier time..then yes..but it only has 3 dates for me to choose from..I can't even go back to December?

if you do a file search for ntbackup.exe and find it (it should be in your %WinDir%\System32 directory) you can double click it to run it.

If you can't find it you can reinstall the tools from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. You need your installation CD to reinstall them.
