using a Dell 3000 series , xp home--intel pentikum 4 processor @ 2.8 GHz with 1MB cache

How do i fix my system restore it wont go past this mth..

Check these links.How to troubleshoot the System Restore tool in Windows XP

System Restore wasn't really intended to be able to restore you back to any arbitrary time in history. It has limits. Limits you can control, somewhat, but even then there are limits

Have you tried safe mode?
