Then you need to move to an OS that you have the CD. Repairs are not going to proceed.

It's like a car with a flat tire. You don't have a spare.

Okay so I'll get a copy. One question about that, i have XP as OEM on my computer, do i need an OEM CD or is it the same as an upgrade/ new install CD.

Cheers

The OEM XP that you get with Dell, HP and other may be on a RESTORE CD set. When you run SFC /SCANNOW, you use the RESTORE CD but don't do the restore.

There is a current discussion about OEM vs. Retail XP on the page, so read that.

Maybe you have the right CD, but just don't know it?

Tell a full story about this machine and how XP got installed?

I was running ME whilst working in India, but it kept crashing.Everything was cheep so i brought an an OEM XP disk there, Xp was installed from that disk, but i no longer have the disk. I have a copy of xp given to me a long time ago but i'ts a lot older than the OEM copy. I'm not sure for who the OEM disk should have been supplied with if that matters.

A long shot: You can try going to the boot menu (F8 while in POST), and go for "....last good configuration..". Try also going into safe mode and try system restore, using both the User account and the Administrator account.

Since you can log on or have done so, "Last known" won't help. What was the problem to begin with that made you try a System Restore?

Thanks everyone for the advice,
but i've managed to sort it myself, whilst following your advice both from my problem and simular problems in other discussions, i noticed more little problems, like javascript not opening pop-ups on web pages. So using google, i couldn't search microsofts page, i found a download from microsoft, Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP, downloaded and run it. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&displaylang=en

Everything is back as it was before i attempted the system restore.

My problem now is i still have norton anti-virus half installed, i'm unable to uninstall it and i don't want to try system restore again. Is there an easy way to get norton uninstalled.

Sometimes this works...

Reinstall Nortons and then try to uninstall using the normal method. If that doesn't work deleting all the bits and pieces may be all that is left. That is a messy proposition and involves editing the registry. Norton has a nasty habit of spreading files everywhere and some are very hard to find and remove.

Good luck!
