System Resource Error Msg

In advance, thanks for your help. I have a Dell 2500 laptop using Windows ME, AOL, and recently installed DSL. Now Windows Scan Disk won't complete, and I even wonder about whether the Norton anti-virus process even completes. I've started to get an error msg that system resources are very low and to close other applications or restart, etc. What's going on and what should I do? I'm concerned about serious irreversible damage. Again, thanks for any help!!
