system recovery in windows 7 home edition

I was given a pc that that the owner had mistakenly formatted, and would like to know if the system recovery from the pc can be used on a formatted hd. Thanks!

If you mean a restore point......NO

If you mean using a recovery partition to restore it to factory shipped condition.....YES

I do mean system recovery. So I can take the system recovery disks the previous owner made when they bught the pc and reinstall the os on the formatted drive?
