system is running so slow!

by JohnnyOMG / November 16, 2006 10:24 AM PST

hi everyone. i have windows xp home edition running on my custom built machine and it's so slow! applications (mostly explorer 7 and firefox) take an extremely long time to load and respond to clicks of the mouse. even aim 6.0 is very slow. i have all of my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs up-to-date and i have no viruses, spyware, toolbars, or startup programs to slow me down. my hard drives are virtually fragment free, so what could possibly be slowing me down? i have a cable internet connection with more than 15mbps down and 2mps up. here are the specs of my computer:

amd athlon 64 3200+ (2.0 ghz)
ecs motherboard with ati xpress 200 chipset
1gb corsair valueselect ram (2x 512mb)
80gb maxtor diamondmax 7200rpm 8mb cache ide hd
jaton nvidia geforce 6600 pci-e x16 256mb

any suggestions or programs i could use to help? thanks!

Try a few things....

What firewall do you have? Have you confirmed that the bandwidth is really that fast? What kinds of memory usage does your computer show? Also what are you calling "long time to load": 2 seconds, 20 seconds, 20 minutes, 2 hours? Have you updated all your drivers and windows components?

i use norton internet security 2007, but it's never caused a problem before. my cpu usage usually never goes about 10% and my page file is never above 700mb. i have norton and i have webroot's spy sweeper. when i installed norton it said someting about an incompatibility, but it's been installed for a while now just recently i've been having problems. when i load up ie 7 it says "connecting..." for about 10 seconds before it actually loads a page. it does the same thing when i open a new tab too. firefox also is very slow to respond when i open new tabs as well.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
